White Lies...

White Lies...

Dana white lies white lies it's in the eyes.

White Lies…

A few weeks ago I was sitting in the changing room after training listening to those assembled discuss whether the UFC would be sold or not. We all remember the reports coming out to say WME/ IMG and maybe others were looking to buy the company. And of course Dana White strongly denying those reports. Was Dana to be believed?

To me it seems that a person’s take on the situation and in particular Dana White’s denial depended on your own personality and life experience. If you considered Dana’s statement credible then maybe you trusted people to tell the truth. Would they not be ashamed to be caught out in a lie just as you yourself would be? Or did you instead trust the ESPN and figure that a CEO of a big corporation like the UFC would lie. If it was in his company’s best interests?

I had my own ideas based on what I’ve seen of Dana White over the years. But I was still a bit surprised when the company was sold just a few days later. How could the denial have been so blatantly revealed to have been false without so much as a blush? Dana will carry on running the show with seemingly no loss to his credibility.

Dana White sells the UFC for $4 billion. There was no outcry of indignation from the media when it turned out that they were indeed selling the UFC. At the time of his flat refutation of ESPN’s article. In fact, his personal credit will go up in the world of fight promotion because his lie helped create space for the probably delicate negotiations to continue. Dana is the best promoter in the business. So what’s a little white lie in the fight game?

A white lie could be described as a lie you tell to stop someone being upset by the truth or to be polite. We all tell them all the time. “No I didn’t have any credit to text you back” would be one example. Or “Those skinny jeans look nice on you”. A White lie on the other hand is a lie you tell to stop the media scaring investors away from spending billions to purchase your company.

A White lie ensures that business gets done. Dana is probably not ashamed to be caught out publically in a lie. And I’m starting to wonder if I should be either. Whether or not you’d be happy to tell a White lie probably depends on your own personality or life experience. Bear in mind though, it could be where the money is.

July Podcast : Strange Wolves

July Podcast : Strange Wolves

July Podcast: UFC 200, Batman & Getting Jacked it’s Strange Wolves

Gary ‘Won’t shut up about Batman’ Mannion from rival Galway gym Point Blank. Replaces the repeatedly absent (and mostly forgotten) Tom Hogan is the latest edition of the Strange Wolves podcast.

Chris Flynn’s top 3 concerns his choice of the UFC champions he thinks won’t hold on to their titles much longer. Some of those belts are slippery!

UFC 200 is reviewed, with universal agreement that the yellow mat was terrible. The main topic for analysis was the proliferation of steroids in the sport at the moment. With Brock “Jacked White Boy” Lesnar and Jon “Nutcase” Jones both popping recently.

And some speculation about which fighters, past and present, might have been on steroids will hopefully be ignored by Strange Wolves’ lawyers.

Real-life superhero Phoenix Jones fights his own brother, Carlos Fodor, at the upcoming World Series of Fighting event. His background is discussed by the panel.

Gary goes off on an extended segue about Batman. Safe to say he’s not getting invited back.

Vinny has been reading John Kavangh’s new book, ‘Win Or Learn’, and gives it a glowing review, despite having to buy his own copy. What the hell John? You guys go way back.

Also the boys preview some of the big upcoming fights including Michael ‘Hands of Stone’ Bisping vs Dan ‘109 years old’ Henderson.

Some bold predictions about UFC 201’s headliner: Robbie Lawlor vs Tyrone Woodley are made.

While Amir Khan’s “UFC training” gets ridiculed, and his chances of a fruitful MMA career come up for debate. Unsurprisingly, everyone’s skeptical.

Marcus and Vinny’s impromptu musical review of the episode is at very least partially successful.

Strange Wolves Competition

And finally there’s a competition coming up on Strange Wolves’ Twitter soon to win a copy of UFC 2 on Xbox. If you’re not already following for the lulz, get on it here: twitter.com/StrangeWolves

This episode was brought to you by the (hopefully fictional) Donkey Dick Soap. “Just because you’re hung like a Donkey, doesn’t mean you have to smell like one”.

Standing at 6’1″ and 215 lbs. Rutten was skilled in both striking (5th degree black belt in Kyokushin Karate, 2nd degree black belt in Shintai Karate, 2nd degree black belt in taekwondo. But especially “Dutch Style” kickboxing, a la the person he admired most in Ramon Dekkers) and grappling. And was ahead of his time in many ways in this regard.

In the video I will cover “the why”, as in why he was such an effective visionary on his road to the UFC Hall of Fame, without further ado……

Another Week on from the Craziest UFC event

Another Week on from the Craziest UFC event

UFC 202 Conor Mcgregor vs nate diaz.

Another week on from the craziest UFC event (in terms of drug test failures) and a week closer to the next biggest card of all time, that being UFC 202

In between the two there is a lull in the events. More bad decisions from Holly Holm’s management, mixed with her complete loss of confidence have pushed her outside of the contenders list for the women’s bantamweight strap. That has been the biggest headline aside from the Lawler v Woodley smash fest that comes up this coming Saturday. I am picking Lawler for that one, I think Condit would beat him and if ‘The Natural Born Killer’ wins his next fight, we will have a rematch.

UFC using the pro wrestling business model here and crossing all of their fingers again. Both fighters win, then the rematch sells itself. They have tried this regularly. They wanted McGregor to beat Diaz and then walk into a super fight (maybe with GSP) at UFC 200. That fell apart due to, it being a sport and no matter what they try, they cannot control anything in the Octagon.

They have been feeding Sage Northcutt a few cans in an attempt to boost his profile and win streak. Sage is too young and too inexperienced to take advantage. As an aside, I think Sage gets far too tough a time. He is young, very talented and is learning every day. If he can get the right people around him he will be top of the sport for years. If he doesn’t then he will keep losing to fighters he should beat.

UFC 202 McGregor v Diaz 2

But enough of that. Let’s start talking about the big one. McGregor v Diaz 2! UFC 202 August 20th in Las Vegas. I am already far too excited. Both camps are making the right noises. Both fighters are saying the right things and we are already on the edge of our seat.

Nate Diaz vs Conor McGregor UFC 196.This event will draw more than the 1.2 million PPV buys that UFC 200 did. So with the money taken care of (the 2 fighters should still get more than they are being paid, but they won’t be short a euro afterwards), let’s talk about what will happen.

For Diaz, he is coming in with confidence. He knows he can hurt McGregor and hit him if and when he wants. He knows that on the ground, he is in charge. He went into that fight with a 2 week camp, took a hammering and didn’t take a backwards step.

Seeing his own blood won’t stop Diaz. Hard to see what more he can do. This time he will be sharper, fitter and more confident than before. He is being treated like a start by the UFC which is another positive for him.

The Camp

Stepping into the McGregor camp is slightly different. Baring in mind that this is coming from the couch and not the actual camp. He is coming in after being dismantled on the ground. Conor knows he can make Nick bleed, but that didn’t help in the last fight. He threw some serious punches that mostly connected and opened up Diaz. But Diaz didn’t move. What does that do to the psyche?

I have been training with monsters that take my best shot and stay upright, it’s a frightening prospect. I know there are talks of better camps and less movement coaches, Conor is the better fighter but it’s all about what happens between the ears.

I am picking McGregor, that is mostly based on my green tinted glasses. Diaz is a monster.

I can’t wait

@nkeegan for more.

Conor McGregor: This Is The Mac Life Resistance Training Drill

The current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor gets in some resistance work on the bag with instructions from coach John Kavanagh along with his teammates at SBG in Dublin. Pretty soon McGregor will once again face Nate Diaz at UFC 202 for much anticipated welterweight rematch. A fight which was originally slated for UFC 200! But like most things in this life, good things come to those who wait people.
