Just like every other sports blogger, I tuned into the UFC Fightpass app at midnight last night to watch Conor McGregor and then have the blog written for me based on his performance. Again, he didn’t disappoint, but this time we could see the effect on the whole press conference, his opponent and the other fighters on stage.![]()
Starting with the event itself. The Irish where in full swing, supporting the King of Ireland. Loud as only the Irish are in a sporting arena and it got under the skin of 2 champions that where on stage.
Tyrone Woodley, welterweight champion and the man who vanquished the beast of the UFC in Robbie Lawler, was rattled by the Irish. Eddie Alvarez, the man who beat the unbeatable Dos Anjos was rattled by the Irish and the ringmaster was in the centre of it all.
Going straight to Conor. He was in fine form. It is only when he is sitting amongst other champions in the UFC that you truly appreciate the charisma, the verbal skill and the overall presentation that he has. He is the perfect mix of Dublin, pro wrestler and fighter. He has kept the quick wit of his home town, added some character taken from the older school of professional wrestling and added that the being a legitimate great in the sport of fighting. The first 2 can be dismissed by opponents or people who do not like him, but the latter is undeniable. And that is the part that frightens his opponents.
The press conference and Alvarez reactions reminded me of what Frank Shamrock said about fighting Nick Diaz (more on the elder Diaz later). He said that he couldn’t believe that Nick was talking so much trash (not using the bad word here) to him that it got into his head. Alvarez was exactly the same. He has never been in this position before. Main event on the biggest card in MMA history is brand new ground for him. He has never been talked to the way McGregor is talking to him. It will take some getting used to. You could see him being rattled at different points.
Now onto the fight itself.
People are talking about Alvarez gas tank, his wrestling and his strong boxing. Let’s take these one at a time. The gas tank? Where is this gas tank? Alvarez has only been 5 rounds twice. He has lost 1 of those fights. There is zero evidence of a gas tank being present. There is no evidence of Alvarez having a chin capable of taking big shots. He has never been in there wilting under pressure and come back. Conor has a chin; he has taken big shots from the biggest punchers and walked forward. He has been put under serious pressure, wilted and come back. He has just gone through 5 hard rounds against Nate. Gas tank goes to McGregor.
The wrestling edge does go to Alvarez. He has a pedigree. But is he a better wrestler than Chad Mendes? No! Yes he is bigger, but so is Conor. If Alvarez gets Conor to the ground, what will he do aside from trying to hold him there? Nothing. He has a weak submission game, so he is looking for ground and pound, a one trick pony.
The boxing is interesting. Both fighters are very good strikers. Alvarez has a 54% KO rate. Average at best. No 1 punch knockout power. McGregor has dynamite in hands, superior movement and an 85% KO rate. This is above average. The level of opponents has been higher for Conor too. Alvarez beat Dos Anjos, but USADA is now in charge. That explains that.
There are people making Alvarez the favourite. For the reasons outlined above I just don’t understand it. He has no clear advantage in any area and his mind is in the process of being battered by McGregor. But this is all dependent on Conor showing up in top shape, trained well, injury free, focused and ready to implement a game plan.
If he does, he will have 2 belts and will be an even bigger pain for the UFC.
I’ll finish with a joke: Did you hear that McGregor is now officially known by the medical industry in Brazil as a form of contraception? Every time a Brazilian signs to fight him, they pull out.

After all the call-outs, and anticipation, “it’s on”. This fight, under the Glory banner, is the most anticipated HW Kickboxing match in years, and has intrigue based on the popularity of both pugilists, and largely on “where are they now?”, not only because of the inactivity of Badr, but the seemingly ever-improving ability and technique of Rico. The fight will be a three-round contest, December 2016, and will take place in Oberhausen, Germany, at the König Pilsener Arena. Verhoeven vs. Hari will be entitled “Collision”.
While I will try to avoid too much speculation, I do want to give some insight into what to potentially expect from both fighters, and cover technique, mental, and “x-factor” like strengths of each. Whether it’s Badr’s potential power advantage, or Rico’s cardio edge, we’ll look at technical efficacy and instinctual tendencies. Without further ado…

Conor McGregor has provided us with it all during his time in the UFC. Wins, losses, world tours, comedy, broken records and even a water bottle infused mini riot with the Diaz brothers.
What more could we ask for, it’s been good, heck, it’s been great. But for everything he has already achieved, his next chapter potentially casts a slight shadow of irrelevance over it all.
Ireland’s favourite son is now heavily tipped to finally make the move to the lightweight division, the division he was always destined to settle at. And what lays in wait for him is a posse of hungry world class menacing savages.
The first of which ranks above them all, UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. The two are hoping to slug it out for the gold in what promises to be a memorable and monumental UFC 205 in Madison Square Garden.
It will the first event in the city so good they named it twice since common sense prevailed and their MMA ban was lifted back in April of this year. Who else really could headline such an event but the notorious one.
Everyone knows his story. Taking out anyone with any relevance in the featherweight division before finishing José Aldo with a thunderous left hand in only 13 seconds to claim the title. The stage was then set for McGregor to move up and take on the then lightweight champion, another Brazilian, Rafael dos Anjos.
Dos Anjos was looking ferocious, riding a five fight win streak that included completely dominating Anthony Pettis to claim the title. He then went on to destroy the heavily touted Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in one round.
So what we had here was a genuine superfight. A fight that would undoubtedly split opinion all across the MMA community, with logical arguments available on both sides of the fence.
But as we all know tragedy struck and dos Anjos was pronounced injured and unable to compete. This news set off an unbelievable barrage of chaotic matchmaking from MMA fans around the world.
I didn’t really care who Conor was matched against, but felt a number one contender fight while we wait on dos Anjos to heal was the logical option.
The UFC had bigger plans, and decided to cash in on the potential fireworks a Nate Diaz vs Conor McGregor show should be. And low and behold, it didn’t disappoint.
The only real disappointment for me is the fact they had it at welterweight. I get the fact that Diaz was coming in on short notice, and McGregor’s confidence would have helped Diaz’ negotiations on that point.
But from a productive point of view the fight had an exhibition edge to it. Neither fighter was going to lose or gain anything significant in a title picture.
Anyway, his UFC lightweight debut to my regret would be delayed. Oh, and then again when Diaz decided to go Jiu Jitsu on McGregor’s ass and choke him out.
So we had to do the whole thing over again, exactly how MCGregor wanted it. The fact that you’re even reading this article tells me we obviously don’t need to go into that.
Don’t get me wrong, it was fun, exciting, and two great fights, but it’s back to business now. And while many believe that business should be the featherweight title defence rematch with José Aldo, I think different.
No disrespect to Aldo, he is one of the greatest champions the world has ever seen and undoubtedly deserves his rematch. But let’s face it, I make McGregor a heavy favourite in that fight just like I did in the first, and that’s largely down to his size and power in that division.
The lightweight division is the place to be and it’s the place where McGregor will earn respect in the UFC. There are few men ranked in that division that haven’t remarked on how the Irish man would be ‘found out’ moving up in weight. Alvarez even claims all his sparring partners are more talented than the featherweight champion.
That’s interesting, and heavy praise indeed if you’re doing some rounds with Eddie Alvarez these days. But I’d doubt the Philadelphia man truly believes that, and that’s all just an attempt to gain an edge with some psychological warfare perhaps.
As well as being a master at it, Conor seems to be a tough old nut to crack when it comes to the mind games. Nate Diaz did have some success in that respect but he too is a seasoned veteran, having been flicking the bird in opponents’ face for the best part of a decade now.
But it’s inside the octagon where the real business is done and that’s where I feel the clarity will be shed in the career of Conor McGregor.
He must be applauded for quickly realising his errors in the first Diaz fight and going back to the drawing board and making the correct adjustments to get the job done second time around.
These lightweights won’t go down as easy as the featherweights did. And I’m pretty sure his fights with Diaz will have helped him come to terms with that.
Ironically, even though the Diaz saga postponed his eventual arrival to the division, I feel he is better prepared now having gone through that. Conor will have to evolve to compete at this weight efficiently, a process I’m sure that has already begun. I expect a less direct version, more prepared to fight on the back foot with counter combinations, making that left hand still a very dangerous weapon in his arsenal.
This Alvarez fight should be fascinating, and win loose or draw McGregor is in the lightweight ranks to stay. Meaning plenty more stylistically fascinating match ups down the line.
Khabib Nurmagomedov, Rafael dos Anjos, Tony Ferguson, Edson Barboza and even the Nate Diaz rubber match are all exciting potential fights. So without further ado, let the games begin.

I’ll be honest; I am getting burnt out with the big shows one after another. It is a real first world problem isn’t it?
This weekend we get to see Stipe Miocic defend again ‘the Reem’ Alistair Overeem. Along with seeing CM Punk take on Mickey Gall. 1 fight is legitimate, interesting and will produce the goods. And the other is a freak show fight that was booked during a downturn.
Starting with the main event. I really like Miocic. He is an animal, fierce competitor and could be in line to challenge Cain Velasquez as the scariest man in the UFC. Overeem on the other hand has the most accolades in terms for fighting sports, but most of those where won while on a heavy diet of ‘horse meat’. Most of you know what I mean when I say ‘horse meat’. Attempts at humour aside, this will be fantastic. Miocic is fierce on his feet, great on the ground and has decent take down defence.
Overeem on the other hand probably won’t attempt a take down between now and the time he passes on. It is all about the striking with these two this weekend. Who connects with the first shot and who hits the last punch? For me I think Overeem hits and connects first, but Miocic withstands the barrage and puts Overeem to the sword, moving on the fighting the fearsome Velasquez next. If I was in this weekend’s main event, I would hope for a draw so no one has to fight Cain. Miocic wins by stoppage.
And then we get on to the emotional main event. When I mentioned CM Punk above, you had a reaction. You either said ‘fair play to him, trying to be a fighter’ or you said ‘he doesn’t deserve it, he’s a fake wrestler’. You are all correct. Using logic, he doesn’t deserve to be in the UFC when there are fighters all around the world who are more deserving of that opportunity.
But also, fair play to him for stepping up and doing it. A lot of us (and you reading) who say ‘I could do that’ never get off the couch and actually try. So for Punk to do this it takes a huge amount of guts. It is not for money, he is a multi-millionaire who doesn’t have to leave the house ever again. He wants a challenge and he will certainly get it this weekend. That is a great example to set for people. It is not Punks fault that UFC called him and offered him a contract during a time when they were suffering from massive injuries and limited main event fights.
Mickey Gall on the other hand knows what is ahead of him. He is legit. He is a silky mixed martial artist very young in his career. He performed on the regional circuit and was unbeaten. He looks to be a far better athlete and a far better fighter in all footage we have seen.
The logical conclusion is that Gall wins inside 2 rounds. But you just never know. Will the bright lights and the pressure get to him?
Either way, it is another exciting weekend for MMA fans. On a side note, I got notice of my next fight in November so I will be blogging about that in future.

This Saturday night, the world will watch on as CM Punk makes his long awaited UFC debut. I’m not going to delve too deep into this whole situation as honestly, everyone’s given an opinion so mine isn’t all that relevant. I think it’s ridiculous that he’s in the premier promotion but regardless, I admire his seemingly pure intentions. Nonetheless, the focus will be, understandably, all on Punk due to his fame and popularity. Opposite him though, is a very different story.
Mickey Gall is just 24 years of age, he’s had only two professional fights and yet due to unforeseen circumstances finds himself on a PPV main card in a huge fight. The reality is that Saturday night is likely to shape the rest of Gall’s career. I hate the phrase ‘must win’ but let’s be honest here, if Gall loses to CM Punk it’s going to be hard for him to shake that from being forever linked to his name. Saturday night basically decides the difference between Gall being a regional fighter known for losing to Punk or a fledgling prospect who gained notoriety by beating him.
Usually when there’s a big, defining fight, we as fans consider how the fighters involved will handle the pressure. However, it’s pretty difficult to do in this scenario. I understand that Punk has performed in front of huge crowds but this is his first MMA fight, he doesn’t even have any amateur experience. There’s no way to know how he’ll react. Gall is also a mystery, even if a lesser one. The only example of Gall having to fight with real pressure thus far is his last fight, his UFC debut against Mike Jackson.
The preliminary bout would decide who would get the Punk fight and considering Gall’s inexperience heading in, he handled the situation perfectly. Gall was aggressive from the start and dropped Jackson very early in the first round before finishing the fight with a rear naked choke, all in 45 seconds. Now I’m not going to sell Gall like he’s an emerging superstar. However, he was confident and assured, that’s always going to bode well for him against a debutant. It’s also important to note that whilst Jackson was making his MMA debut, he had kickboxing and boxing experience, which is more than can be said for Punk.

Although, it should be remembered that while there was certainly pressure on Gall heading into that fight back in February, this is a whole different scenario. This is a main card fight on a PPV, it’s been heavily advertised and it’s going to take place in front of a huge crowd. Gall isn’t prepared for this kind of an event, he simply can’t be at this point of his career. That’s definitely a factor to keep an eye on as we go through fight week. However, if Gall can replicate his approach in the Jackson fight, it shouldn’t have much an impact.
I must concede that when the UFC signed Punk I expected an opponent with a losing record. That’s not a criticism either, he has no experience so there’d be nothing wrong with that kind of opposition. Now I reiterate, I’m not saying Gall’s the prospect of the year, but he does seem different. He has his own ambitions, his own motivations and his own career. That’s the part so many are forgetting, the result of this fight doesn’t just lie on Punk’s shoulders. There’s a chance that Punk surprises us, looks competent, comfortable and yet still loses. Why? Because Gall has a say in the matter. We genuinely don’t know how good Gall is, which makes his place as Punk’s opponent even stranger.
There’s a lot of questions to ask as we head into this Saturday night. It’s nothing if not intriguing. I guess time will tell, it’s virtually impossible to know what to expect. Nevertheless, I wanted to stress this: I have respect for what Punk is doing here, he’s throwing himself into a new world and taking a big risk. Though I don’t love everything about it, I can appreciate that aspect of it at least. On the other hand, Gall’s young career depends on what happens here, that’s quite a scary thought for such an inexperienced fighter. Either way, Saturday night, we find out the answers.
