Video: Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez Preview / Breakdown

Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez Preview / Breakdown

Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez : UFC 205 Preview – Pre-Fight – Skill Breakdown / Film Study / Highlights

In one of the most anticipated main events, on the most anticipated fight card of the year, Saturday, November 12th, at Madison Square Garden -UFC 205– newly crowned 155 lb. (Lightweight) champion Eddie Alvarez (+135 )will defend his title against ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor (-150). While many purists view this fight as a tad premature, it’s a business decision that the UFC has made, and regardless of who wins, the fallout shall be interesting.

Here I will breakdown the fight in three phases (and briefly touch on mental toughness): 1.Striking and Distance managent etc. 2. “The In-Between” game, which will include clinching and takedowns, as well as defense. and 3. Ground work, submissions, and transitions as well as ground striking.

Next contest winner will be decided by who wins this, how, and for something new, whom they will face next. For example Conor via TKO rd. 1 TKO / Jose Aldo or Eddie ALvarez rd. 1 TKO / Khabib. I don’t make picks, those are merely examples using the number one contenders.

Get a notepad and wash your hands, grab a notepad, as I’ll try to cram about an hoursworth of information into a 15 minute video (if possible). Enjoy, cheers.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Winning MMA Debut vs Vusal Bayramov

There’s wide agreement, if not only acknowledgment that Khabib Nurmagomedov is perhaps the most dangerous fighter in the world at 155lbs. Having been sidelined from `April 2014 till April 2016. The Eagle, unbeaten as a professional at 23 – 0 was buzz sawing his way through the elite of the UFC before being injured. Here he is in his profesional MMA Debut against Vusal Bayramov at CSFU Champions League. Watch for the trademark takedown, full mount to slick finish in the first round.

If Khabib handles Michael Johnson like he has all other before him. Expect a quick turn around and shot at the winner of McGregor vs. Alvarez.

Video: @feliceherrig Wants to Share her Most Favorite Thing to do with You...

I don’t usually post too much of myself sparring. But I wanted to share my most favorite thing to do with you. ” Timing sparring ” timing sparring should be about 60-70% so not super light but also not super hard either. The objective is not to hurt your training partner but work on timing , speed, and accuracy in a live setting without having to really worry about hurting yourself or your partner. Also to try new moves and techniques you might be too afraid to try in a 100% live situation. And In the process you’re really protecting those brain cells. Of course this is a contact sport and there are no guarantees of not getting injured in anything you do. But the risk factor here is much lower.

As always thank you @jseebergermma for being a fabulous training partner

UFC 205: HISTORIC

UFC 205 MSG NYC historic.

UFC 205: Where History Will be Made

UFC 205 is just over the horizon and on paper the massive card looks to set all time records across the board. With such a long a protracted wait for mixed martial arts to be sanctioned in the Big Apple. The wait is now finally over.

On November 12th 2016, an assembled group featuring some of the sports greatest fighters will step into the octagon at Madison Square Garden New York city. For one of the best cards ever put together by the Ultimate Fighting Championships. With three titles on the line and 13 fights in total. The UFC has pulled out all the stops to try ensure that their first show in the Empire State makes nothing less than a huge splash. Leaving a lasting impression on those fans which have waited for what seemed like an eternity for the worlds number one mma promotion to finally arrive.

UFC 205 title fights line up.Stacked is a term all too often all too casually thrown around, but in this case it truly is fitting. With an undercard alone boasting two former champions in Frankie Edgar and Rashad Evans. Along with a number one contender fight in the lightweight division between the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov and Michael Johnson.

The main card sees the former women's bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, take on Raquel Pennington. Alongside Donald Cerrone, who has looked outstanding at welterweight, facing the always dangerous TUF 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum.

The fighter who put an end to Anderson Silva's run in the UFC, former middleweight champion and New York native Chris Weidman, faces the explosive wrestler Yoel Romero. Who although hasn't fought since December 2015, holds an undefeated 7 fight win streak inside the octagon.

In the first of the three title fights we have an all Polish clash, being marketed to the masses as a civil war between these two former foes. The ultra dominant Joanna Jedrzejczyk will look to defend her title for a 4th time against Karolina Kowalkiewicz.

In the co main event on the evening 'The Chosen One' Tyron Woodley didn't get his date with Georges Saint Pierre. But instead was forced to settle for a title defense against Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson. It's a fight which many pundits are giving to the karate standout. Although I'm quite confident in saying Woodley doesn't see it the same way.

The nights main event is one of mammoth proportions. As for the first time in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championships. One fighter looks to hold two titles at the same time. Step forward current featherweight champion Conor McGregor. Who is looking to also claim the lightweight crown from Eddie Alvarez.

Conor McGregor with two UFC belts.Hard to believe that just a few short years ago. The brash Irishman was only breaking into the big time with a stunning stoppage of Marcus Brimmage. Fast forward to now and McGregor has summarily disposed of the featherweight king Jose Aldo Junior. Establishing his own monarchy at the top of the UFC pile.

He now looks to dominate new territory that is the lightweight division. And to once again banish yet another reigning champion in Alvarez. Vanquishing him to the annals of mma history. Make no mistake about it. This is a fight which perhaps only comes along once in a lifetime. It's a huge ask for the man from SBG. But for McGregor himself, he absolutely believes that this is his destiny .

Come November 12th at The Garden in NYC. McGregor may very well cement his legacy as one of the greatest fighters to ever grace the hallowed canvas of the octagon. And all that stands between him and that assured greatness is a grizzled veteran, who himself believes he has the Irishman's ticket.

The Return of Ronda Rousey

Return of Ronda Rousey.

The Return of Ronda Rousey

The amount of new in MMA lately is hard to digest. Just so much of it.

This week we are looking at the return of Ronda Rousey. The saviour of women’s MMA (don’t mention Gina Carrano) makes a return to the cage for the first time since losing her title to Holly Holm, who has in turn lost the title to Meisha Tate, who has lost the title to Amanda Nunes.

So have we caught up?

Ronda has gone through a transformation. In the beginning at Strikeforce the big smile, arm breaker was making fans (and money) faster than fast. She was breaking people up in record time, building an empire and stacking up the wins while collecting the Strikeforce belt along the way. Her toughest test was Meisha Tate, and that wasn’t a massive test. She was untouched in that fight. All was good. She defended the title in the same fashion and opened the door for women to (rightly) fight in the UFC. It all started as Strikeforce finished. She stacked up the bodies and stacked up the wins. The big smile was winning fans from all around the globe.

And then the Ultimate fighter happened. She was to coach against arch nemesis Meisha Tate.  This was when it began to turn around for Rousey. She began acting like a spoilt teenage girl. Screaming and generally acting like a petulant child. The backslash had begun.

To those who read her book, this was no surprise. Her competitive nature sometimes gives way to baby-ish behaviour.

Holly Holm against Ronda Rousey fight. The victories continued until she ran into the human buzz saw that was Holly Holm. A woman trained for 1 mission and that was to beat the unbeatable Ronda Rousey. And that is what she did. It wasn’t a fight, Holm demolished Rousey. Ronda looked off, she was not herself and it appeared that the fame had gone to her head. She over looked her opponent and paid for it in the worst way.

Instead of dusting herself off, much like the great Conor McGregor did, she reacted so badly that the media couldn’t avoid it. Up to this point she was the darling of the media. She could do no wrong. But this was too far. The media reported (and I don’t mean twitter) on her behaviour and even the tiny Paige Vanzant discussed a run in with her at a Reebok shoot on the Joe Rogan Podcast. That is well worth a listen.

So team Rousey go on the offensive, saying that everyone has turned on her when it was her true colours that have been costing her.

She comes back to fight. I would put money on the fact that if Holm was still champion, she would still be making films. She would still be sticking with Hollywood. If it was Tate, she would still stay in H’wood. I don’t think Rousey fancies her chances against Tate after the Holm title win. Ironically Tate went down the same route as Rousey and overlooked Nunes which is where her title went. Now Rousey fancies her changes against Nunes.

Nunes is dangerous. Rousey struggles under pressure. This is not an easy fight for Ronda. But she should win and get the belt back. Followed by retirement.

In closing, I think Ronda is an elite fighter. But she cannot handle adversity well. If Nunes can put some knuckles on her chin it will put Rousey back in the same position she was in with Holm. Will she react differently? Or will she close down like before?

This is the reason to watch!

Until next time, @nkeegan for more.

Saenchai - Skill Breakdown / Film Study / Highlights

Saenchai - Skill Breakdown / Film Study / Highlights

Saenchai - Skill Breakdown / Film Study / Highlights

Saenchai (formerly known as) Sor. Kingstar has won the Lumpinee Championship title in four different weight classes, mostly above his weight. He is considered by many to be the best pound for pound Muay Thai fighters in the world, now and / or ever. Against non-Thai's the gap in skill is so great he will go up as high as 147 pounds, which is about 15 lbs above his weight class. He retired from serious competition in 2014, and now solely competes against foreign fighters sometimes called Nak Muay Farang, meaning "foreign boxer. For myself, and other western combat sport enthusiasts it is hard to get a mental grasp on his professional Muay Thai record with 300 Wins, 52 Losses (with most if not all of them being by decision), and 3 Draws at the age of 36 years old.

Saenchai is a "southpaw" or left handed / stance fighter. The southpaw is dangerous, the different stance creating power from different angles. The majority of training an orthodox striker has done in sparring and / or competition is normally and predominantly against other orthodox strikers, while the southpaw has the same disparity work in their favor.

Left handedness is far from a prerequisite for learning to fight southpaw though. In striking arts, there is a common thread that in the "Far East"; Thailand and Japan particularly, southpaws are much more common, as is left handedness in general. However many of the more successful southpaws in the world are simply southpaws because they chose to be; Anderson Silva, Mirko Cro Cop, and the Diaz brothers are all right handed, while Marvin Hagler and Manny Pacquiao are apparently ambidextrous.

He is known for having an off the chart fight IQ, dramatic footwork; often in the form of drastic center-line manipulation, kick catching abilities, powerful sweeps, varietal attacks, and cat-like reflexes that aid him defensively, such as his 'lean back' high kick evasion.

Saenchai is an interesting dichotomy of Thai traditionalist and quixotic pugilist, using both fundamentally sound and exotic and / or uncommon techniques traditionally seen in modern-era Muay Thai. Many of his attacks/techniques are rooted more in Muay Boran, which loosely means 'Ancient Boxing' dates back to Siam in the 18th century as a form of militaristic, hand to hand combat. It was not until the 1930's that equipment, structure and rule sets changed the form to sport.

The Spider Anderson Silva taking and dishing out some big punches during a hard training session. Looks like the former UFC middleweight champion is in good health and perhaps preparing for an upcoming bout? We wonder who that might be… any little birdies know? Regardless, we can’t wait until Silva steps back into the cage and does what he does best. Hopefully before the end of 2016!

Give Us Diaz vs St Pierre 2

Georges St Pierre vs Nick Diaz 2.

Give Us Diaz vs St Pierre 2

The word on the street is Georges St Pierre is nearing his return to the octagon, and at this stage of the game there is only one fight that truly makes sense.

St Pierre and Nick Diaz finally got to throw down at UFC 158 in what was one of the most anticipated bouts in the organisations history. Diaz had been very vocal for years proclaiming that he was the number one welterweight fighter in the world, especially in his Strikeforce days where he was the dominant 170lb champion.

But as dominant as the Stockton man was in Strikeforce, St Pierre matched that dominance and more in the premiere MMA organisation in the world. There was a logical argument on both sides of the fence to whom actually was the best, and when the UFC purchased Strikeforce in 2011 it seemed the score we all wanted settled was imminent.

However Diaz being Diaz through a spanner in the works when he failed to show up for a UFC 137 press conference where the pair where set to face off. The UFC reacted by pulling Nick from the contest and awarded the title shot to Carlos Condit.

The former Strikeforce champion was then paired with the great BJ Penn for his return to the promotion and he didn’t disappoint. Diaz beat Penn from pillar to post that night and further enhanced his argument that he was the number one welterweight in the world.

Diaz taunts Georges St Pierre. This was it now, finally we were going see the two best welterweights in the world go to war. Sadly not, tragedy struck again when St Pierre injured his knee and would be sidelined for quite some time. This meant we would be made wait again for the fight to finally happen, and it was definitely going to happen, providing Diaz got past Condit for the interim title. Easier said than done however, Diaz came up short and was on the losing side of a split decision that really could have gone either way.

If that wasn’t enough the Nevada State Athletic Commission deemed the fact Nick likes to smoke a harmless plant from time to time unfair behaviour, and banned him from competition for a year. Where we ever going to see this fight?

Yes, we where, and we did. Diaz returned from his suspension and soon was scheduled to take on the long reigning UFC champion in his home country Canada. What resulted was conclusive, Georges St Pierre was the best welterweight in the world, or at least the better man on the night.

That was three and a half years ago, and a lot has happened in the careers and lives of both men since. St Pierre defended his title against Jonny Hendricks and looked a shadow of the man that faced Diaz, and was extremely lucky to have been awarded the decision on the night.

This along with personal issues provoked the Canadian into a hiatus from the sport and the MMA community have been waiting on his return ever since. Likewise Diaz has been an absent figure in this time, with only one middleweight bout against the greatest of all time Anderson Silva sandwiched in between two suspensions.

It’s fair to say that since their big fight back in 2013, both men’s careers have taken a serious turn for the worse. So what better way to undo this dreaded curse than to roll the tape back and do it all over again. We waited long enough for the first fight I think we deserve a second installment.

There are people out there who will say “what’s the point? St Pierre battered him the first time”. And that’s fair enough, but any elite fighter can beat another on any given night, we have surely all learned that by now.

They have both stated that they only want a big money fight, and other than a red panty night with Mystic Mac, I can’t see any bigger pay day than this. If anything Nate Diaz’ gain in popularity in his pair of flings with McGregor has probably also enhanced his brother’s popularity in this crazy world we live in.

There’s also the fact that both men are coming back from long absences, which conveniently takes away the ring rust factor. I actually feel it adds an extra spice to the contest and should be a dream for those tasked with making promotional videos for the UFC.

Who else is there out there really to face either man? St Pierre has been touted alongside Anderson Silva, but that fight was supposed to happen five years ago. It has a Pacquaio Mayweather anticlimax feel about it if you ask me.

Let’s do Nick Diaz versus Georges St Pierre 2, and let’s do it now. UFC 206 in Toronto needs a main event and there aren’t two better men available to fill it. The UFC needs to give the pair the money they deserve, give the fans the fight they deserve, and then we can all sit back and enjoy and take it from there.

Will UFC 204 be a Fitting Swan Song for the Man They Call Hendo?

Dan Henderson fights at UFC 204.

Can Dan Henderson End on a High at UFC 204

Time waits for no man, not even Dan Henderson. At 46 years of age Hendo, as he is affectionately known to his fans, is officially calling it a day. Bringing to an end a career in mixed martial arts which has spanned almost 20 years.

He began fighting professionally around the same time as fighters like Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz. An accomplished wrestler, he achieved both National and Olympic success before turning his talents to mma.

For the most part Henderson’s career blossomed out of sight and away from the gaze of the US fan base, on the other side of the Pacific ocean. While Tito and Chuck were becoming household names, Hendo was forging his own legend in the brutal 10 minute rounds that was Pride Fighting Championships. Becoming a two division champion in the organisation.

Dan Henderson holding Pride Fighting Championship belts.Pride garnered its own legions of hardcore fans. Running a parallel promotion which for many was simply the best in the world. Sure the Ultimate Fighting Championships was there first, the match that lit the fuse shall we say. But Pride had its own unique allure, its very own spectacular showmanship, style and a roster hosting some of the worlds greatest fighters. All while drawing massive crowds to its tournament finals, with numbers which still to this day are unrivaled.

It was in this environment where Hendo shone. Taking on some of the biggest and baddest Japan had to offer. Meeting Wanderlei Silva in his first ever Pride bout and losing by decision. Those were brutal, yet awe inspiring times and Dan Henderson was at the fore.

Along with many others who some may have forgotten or not even known, cut their teeth outside of the UFC. Fighters such as Alistair Overeem, Shogun Rua, Quinton Jackson, Mirko cro Cop, Mark Hunt and many more. Before finally being merged into the its ranks back in 2007. In a buyout that signaled the return of Hendo to US soil after a 9 year absence.

A varied career of wins, losses and classic fights followed. With yet another championship belt won under the Strikeforce banner. Henderson was also one of the very few men in the world to beat the legend that is Fedor Emelianenko, to fight across four different weight divisions from welterweight right up to heavyweight. Yet something was still missing… a UFC title.

Now some two decades on at the grand age of 46, with 46 fights under his belt. Can he recapture those times which made him a true fan favourite and one of the most dangerous men on the planet.

When he faces Michael Bisping for the middleweight title in Manchester, in front of the champions home crowd. Can he silence the fans, the critics and the doubters? To once again have yet another gold strap placed around his waist, one last time.

I can’t help but think that there will be a whole legion of fans hoping for one more winning performance. Some simply because they just may not be fans of Michael Bisping. While for others I’m sure, it would be a fitting end to a career which has captivated the hearts and minds of those who follow this very young sport. By one of the oldest and most decorated competitors to ever to grace the octagon.

The crowning glory to a glittering career for the man they call Hendo.

UFC 204: Dan Henderson – I Beat Him Before, I’ll Beat Him Again

UFC and PRIDE FC veteran Dan Henderson is confident that he will once again beat Michael Bisping. When he faces him for a second time this weekend for the UFC middleweight title at UFC 204. Why you might ask? Well because he already beat him in their first bout at UFC 100. But we have to remember that was along time ago and alot has changed since then, alot of water under the bridge and years gone by. Has father time been good and can he still land that H bomb?
