Legend Peter Aerts: The "Dutch Lumberjack" Retires

Peter Aerts Retires From kickboxing

This week has been a rollercoaster of emotions in terms of combat sports. The World watched the changing of the guard in terms of heavyweight boxing. As Anthony Joshua knocked out one of the sports greatest champions in Wladimir Klitschko.

But there was some one else who hung up his gloves for the final time. A kickboxing legend who in many ways inspired many of my generation to don a pair of gloves and give it a go. He is Peter Aerts. Known to his fans around the world as the Dutch Lumberjack. At 46 years of age Aerts has been fighting professionally for over 30 years! And on 23th of April 2017, he signed off for one final time with a win over Nordine Mahieddine.

A multiple-time World champion in kickboxing and Muay Thai. For many, he will be most widely remembered for his exploits inside the K1 arena. A kickboxing promotion where the very best heavyweights in the world competed for the title of k1 champion. With a total of 3 K1 titles to his name and such memorable matches against fighters such as the late great Andy Hug. Fellow kickboxing legend Ernesto Hoost. Jerome Le Banner, Mike Bernardo, Mirko Cro Cop and so many more. It is a very sad day to see the final curtain coming down on the career of a true icon.

If you already haven’t, now is the time to get to know one of the greatest kickboxers to ever step inside the ring. His career may be over, but his fights and legacy will live on in infamy. Enjoy your retirement Peter Aerts, much love from a lifelong fan 🙂

Conor McGregor - Skill Breakdown / Film Study / Highlights NEW 2017

Conor McGregor – Skill Breakdown / Film Study / Highlights NEW 2017

“Only a left hand”? Eddie Alvarez (all due respect) claimed before his loss to The Notorious One. In reality, Conor does have a tremendous proclivity to land his “Celtic Cross” or “Death Touch” with devastating results, but the question should really be how and why? To dismiss it as a magic trick, and/or say he is a one trick pony is a bit disingenuous and for others just dismissive.

So….my aim here is to show “The How and Why”, in this case, how and/or why does McGregor land that left hand so often with devastating results? Is it bad planning by opponents? Is it the speed or power of the punch itself? The accuracy? It may be all of the above…..let’s look. Cheers.

Conor McGregor's Training Philosophy | Repetition Vs Diversity

Conor McGregor’s Training Philosophy | Repetition Vs Diversity

Rinse and repeat, the age old philosophy for mastery… But is that the truth? Conor McGregor thinks otherwise, but what does current science say? Thank you for joining me as I explain.

script: “Always mix up your training equipment and your training patterns to keep your workouts fresh. The engine knows no different. The engine simply knows it is being called upon to work. Never become a specialist in one area of training. A specialist is simply a rookie in every other area.

There’s an old assumption that training the same motor skill, or technique, piano piece etc over and over again is the ideal way to master it, but Conor appears to go against that very grain, implying we should always keep what we do fresh, always mix it up to ensure we don’t become a specialist only doing one thing too many times.

For a lot of you, this may already sound like blasphemy, but could there be any truth to what he’s saying? That constantly mixing up your regiment is the ideal way to learn and grow?

John Hopkins University actually tested this, exploring the difference between doing the same thing over and over again versus consistently mixing up your regiment or task.

They took 86 volunteers to learn a new skill, and the volunteers were split into three groups. Each spent 45 minutes practising the skill. Six hours later one of the groups was asked to repeat the same training exercise again, while the other group performed a slightly different version, while the third group only completed the first training session to act as a control.

When the training period was over, everyone was tested on their ability to perform the new skill, and of course the control group did the worst, but amazingly, the people who constantly mixed up their training by consistently modifying it, did twice as good as the people who just kept repeating the task over and over again.

It is theorised that the reason for this is reconsolidation, a process where existing memories are modified with new knowledge.

I’ll leave a link for this down bellow.

But non the less, this shows, Conor McGregor is somehow ahead of the curve when it comes to his training philosophy, and I don’t know how he figured this out, but by keeping his workouts fresh, by what I believe using reconsolidation, he appears to have gained a learning advantage when it comes to developing his fighting skills.

Cub Swanson expresses his experience with mixing up regiments here as well.

Another reason could be it helps keep your motivation up by keeping the training sessions always interesting, so you always have interest thus motivation in working hard to master that skill…

But another important reason to ensure the diversity of your training regiment could be to mitigate the pruning of your existing skills also known as synaptic pruning. When you don’t use skills for too long, say riding a bike, playing the piano, doing that sick 360 kick, your brain prunes away at the pathways you aren’t using, and so perhaps in a way by Conor always mixing up his training, he’s ensuring he’s always keeping his skills fresh as well, thus, it’s probably safe to say that what Conor is doing and telling us is the truth, and through this knowledge, I hope you find an edge for your own path, because, at the end of the day, we are all warriors one way or another.

Michael Bisping - Breakdown / Skill Study /Highlights

Michael Bisping – Breakdown / Skill Study /Highlights

Luke Rockhold (C) vs. Michael Bisping – Breakdown / Film Study / Keys to Victory

Great study / lesson in the importance of fundamentals at the highest level. In particular, Bisping’s boxing fundamentals-friendly striking. In one of the biggest upsets in UFC history. Bisping went beyond fundamentals, and for my smarks out there, if I had told you ‘The Count’ was ‘shifting’ his way to a MW Championship. Around the time most of MMA’s studious fans became more aware of the concept (Dillashaw vs. Barao 1, IMO), you’d have told me I was a silly person.

In an open stance striking affair (Orthodox vs. Southpaw) the “righty” relies on 1. Footwork and Positional Dominance: (Almost) Always avoiding the L power side of the opponent 2. Throwing jabs with great variance, as a southpaw has many advantageous counter-punches to the jab 3. Your R cross / 2 (especially when you’re in a position to take your own head down and away to the left, throwing “under” opponents right hand. Some call this “shooting your cross”) and an angled and or distanced L hook / 3 (angle due to check hook pivots, angle of punch / distance control via keying off the jab, but not getting caught by it either)

3. Staying “lead hand long” when you have a reach disadvantage in the open stance. Normally the southpaw fighter uses this in the form of a probing/rangefinder jab (see Guillermo Rigondeaux). 4. When you aren’t using your lead hand as a rangefinder, make sure that the jab has distance upon entry and exit alike. It also is in your interest to not quite up jab but to throw the jab from a lower seated stance, and come up with it to target. 5. Avoid the L cross / 2 and R Hook / 3 of your opponent, they are their best counter-punches, respectively. 6. Keep your fuckin hand’s up!

Additional Notes: I won’t cover much of the kicking game here, as it really what the focus should be on here. Also the B Hop discussion is about a minute and a half long, but a year’s worth of information for beginner’s (especially the tennis ball trick, which I’ve totally stolen in “real life”). If you aren’t Roy Jones Jr., don’t “drape” your lead hand too much. At a distance, it’s not the worst thing to do, but within close proximity your need to have your hands up. “Pride Goeth Before the Fall”………always.

Bernard Hopkins is a brilliant boxing mind, so I included an old clip of him and Rashad Evans discussing the importance of protecting your chin (among other things). Search YouTube for B HOP knowledge bombs.

Original B Hop / Rashad Clip – Bernard Hopkins “teaches” Rashad Evans how to throw a right hand….

Sad Story of Prichard Colon: A Fighter Who was Left in a Persistent Vegetative State

Fighter Prichard Colon: Left in a Persistent Vegetative State

How one boxing match changed the life of Prichard Colon. This short documentary piece from Outside the Lines tells the story of an up and coming prospect Prichard Colon. Who following a bout in 2015 was left brain damaged and in a constant vegetative state.

His head, raised by pillows on top of a hospital bed. Comes to the mid-section of his depiction on a fringed, life-sized tapestry hanging on a wall of diagonal wood panelling. He’s shown in a fighter’s stance, and above that, victorious, with arms raised.

In terms of boxing, he appeared to have the skill and determination to fulfil his dreams. Which he first expressed as a little boy. Now he lays here as a testament to the peril that accompanies prizefighting promise.

“He always knew what he wanted in life — he’d say, ‘Mommy, I want to be a professional boxer, and I want to represent Puerto Rico, and I want to be a world champion,'” said Nieves Colon of when her son was in elementary school.

Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather – My Thoughts / Channel Update

Please make this worth my while……..I say ummm a lot, I’m tired and getting old, but it’s all worth it for what is sure to be a viral video!!!

State of affairs with this channel. I will do my first “real” breakdown @500 subs. Going forward new software and content in general.

P.S. If this gets taken down (my channel), search for my name and KenFlo. There is no reason on earth that people doing reaction and highlight videos are not only getting millions of hits and thousands of subs, but staying up for years while my videos are taken down MANUALLY. This is not an accident. SO…..not a threat to anyone, but for those of you that know, know…..I’ll expose the entire game and yes I have it ALL saved in 10 spots.

Lion Fight: The Best Kept Secret In Combat Sport

Lion fight fighters in action.

Lion Fight: The Best Kept Secret In Combat Sport

Most of you will have heard of Lion Fight but the more people I speak to about it, the more I realise how few of us real combat sport fanatics have actually paid much attention to high level Muay Thai. I, like most of you, was well aware of this promotion. I’ve heard Joe Rogan discuss it on his podcast, I saw the initial Tiffany Time Bomb hype; but despite all that, I shamefully have to admit that I’d never really paid enough attention to the fights. For this, Lion Fight, I am truly sorry. And here commences my love letter to you.

Lion Fight was founded in 2010 by a chap called Scott Kent. He was a security bigwig for some Vegas casinos prior to entering the murky world of fight promotion, and has trained kickboxing and Muay Thai for much of his life. I know all of this from reading this feature called Scott Kent: The Lion behind Lion Fight on the Lion Fight website because I can’t find shit else about him.

Spinning backfist hurts when landed.

I’m being melodramatic of course, you can find information if you look hard enough, but the point is we’re dealing with a much smaller promotion than we’re used to in say, MMA or kickboxing. They are not the UFC, they’re not Bellator or Glory, they’re not even WSOF. They don’t have the finances of any of their rivals or contemporaries, the marketing budget or the pre-existing public profile. They don’t even have a fucking Wikipedia page. Whilst this makes life a little harder when it comes to educating yourself and researching for articles, it does mean you get a bunch of free fights on YouTube to peruse at your leisure. Every cloud and all that.

Remember a second ago when I said with some incredulity that they don’t even have a Wikipedia page? Here are some people that do have a Wikipedia page – Axs TV Fights. Axs TV (the artists formerly known as HDNet) are a TV network previously owned by Mark Cuban, and now co owned by Mark Cuban’s company 2929 Entertainment along with CBS, Ryan Seacrest for some reason and a few other parties. Axs TV have been wonderful for combat sport, not only did they have InsideMMA for so many years; they have also covered numerous small-to-medium promotions with production values far beyond what they could otherwise have afforded.

It’s thanks to Axs TV that a promotion like Lion Fight has some of the best announcing in the business. The irrepressible Michael ‘The Voice’ Schiavello, my personal all-time favourite play-by-play commentator sits beside the straight talking and ridiculously knowledgeable MMA legend Pat Miletich. That, for the casual fan, is huge. Joe Rogan’s value to the UFC in explaining the ground game is priceless. Though not as alien to the untrained eye as grappling, Miletich’s explanations of high level striking are a thing to behold, and a highlight of any broadcast.

Muay Thai Jorina ‘JoJo’ Baars vs Cyborg.

The story of my own personal interest in this promotion can be told through three different fighters. I was first awakened to Lion Fight, and honestly to Muay Thai as a discipline in March 2014, when the most dominant fighter in mixed martial arts, Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino went over to face what the first of these fighters, Jorina ‘JoJo’ Baars, in what we heard would be an actual challenge. She main evented Lion Fight 14 against the undefeated then 25 year old Baars. Almost everyone reading this will know how that went, but suffice is to say it certainly was an actual challenge.

Cyborg took the Muay Thai expert 5 hard rounds, losing a decision in an absolutely epic contest that, amazingly, you can watch for free on YouTube. Amazingly, despite being the most dangerous striker with tits since Roy Nelson, Baars has only managed to put together a 1-3 run in her MMA career. She has though remained imperious and a lot more active in the art of 8 limbs, fighting twice in 2015, twice in 2016 and making her 2017 bow recently for Bellator Kickboxing to move to 41-0-3 in her career.

Lion fight Champion Tiffany ‘Time Bomb’ Van Soest

But I digress, moving on from one bad bitch to another, the 2nd fighter that caught my interest was Tiffany ‘Time Bomb’ Van Soest. Timebomb first appeared on the horizon many years ago, when she defeated London’s very own combat sport stalwart Alexis Rufus with a brutal 4th round KO. She returned shortly afterwards, this time clutching her newly won Lion Fight Women’s Featherweight belt to beat another brit, ‘The Princess of Pain’ Lucy Payne, whom she would stop in the first round.

Despite another victory over Payne the following year, and a win over another brit, Bernise Alldis, it wasn’t until controversy struck that I took notice of ‘Time Bomb’ again. Tiffany said Lion Fight hadn’t paid her, Lion Fight disputed this. Regular readers will know I’m partial to some combat sport gossip from time-to-time, but this isn’t the article in which to engage TMZ mode. So let’s get back to the fights. A 12-1 run in Lion Fight culminated in Van Soest selling her title belt (old habits) Van Soest moving on to Glory and then Invicta, but not before some sensational performances inside the ring, including against Poland’s Martyna Krol, which I have graciously linked for your bloody enjoyment.

Lion fight champion.

The third and final member of my own personal Muay Thai holy trinity, is Gaston “The Dreamkiller” Bolanos. A relative unknown prior to his appearance with teammate and fellow Lion Fight standout Kevin Ross on the Joe Rogan ExperienceBolanos has since been signed by Bellator and already has a win under his belt in both MMA and kickboxing under the banner. It was in Lion Fight though that he honed his craft.

Bolanos has been involved in a number of absolute barnburners during his brief career; including the aptly titled ‘Spinning Back Elbow of Death’ from his bout with fellow MMA convert Caleb Archer back at Lion Fight 20, his bloodbath win over Tyler Toner in only his second career fight, and his absolute war with veteran Thai welterweight Kronphet Phetrachapat at Lion Fight 27. Bolanos, despite his tender age of just 24 years old has one of the most consistently exciting back-catalogues of any fighter in any discipline in any promotion I’ve ever seen. And as prone to hyperbole as I can be, do not take this claim lightly. This guy is as legit as they come and the sky is the limit.

Some nasty muay thai elbows.

Lion Fight is one of the most impressive promotions you’ll come across. Pound-for-pound the most exciting fights out there, blood, entertainment and glorious violence combined with some of the most high-level technique on offer in the striking world. They return with their latest offering later this month, and it will be headlined by a Lightweight title showdown between the champion, Dutch-Surinamese (a heady concoction) Sergio Wielzen and Phuket Top Team’s very own Lerdsila Chumpairtour.

As is often the case with Thai fighters, Chumpairtour has had an astonishing amount of fights, and was at one point riding a 100 fight win streak! A run that saw him capture Bangkok’s fabled Rajadamnern Stadium on three separate occasions. The event takes place on April 28th at the Foxwoods Casino on Connecticut. Give it a go, if you’re a meathead like me, you’ll love it.

The Gloves Are Off: Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Klitschko - 16/04/17

Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Klitschko – The Gloves Are Off

Anthony Joshua faces the former undisputed heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. At Wembley stadium London 29th of April 2017. In what is sure to be one of the biggest heavyweight fights in recent memory. This will be the by then, the 41 year old Klitschko’s first time back in the ring following his devastating loss to Tyson Fury in November 2015. With Fury currently out of the picture. The young Lion Joshua will look to defend his IBF heavyweight title. While also vying to claim the vacant WBA (Super) and IBO heavyweight titles.

It’s going to be a huge fight, not just in boxing terms. But in front of a packed ninety thousand seat Wembley, in Joshua’s home town. How will the former sparring partner of Klitschko look against one of the greatest heavyweights of all time who is in his own words “obsessed”. To once again regain the heavyweight championship of the world. With no foul language, no insults. Just two cool calm and collected killers, who know each other quite well. This made for an unexpected yet truly intriguing sit down.

Emerging from Flames of Destruction: Tom ‘The Fire Kid’ Duquesnoy

Tom 'Firekid' Duquesnoy

Tom ‘The Fire Kid’ Duquesnoy: Emerging from flames of destruction

On Saturday night Europe’s pound for pound number one fighter makes his much anticipated debut in the world’s premier mixed martial arts promotion.

Feelings across Europe are that Duquesnoy’s plunge into the big time has been a long time coming. It would be widely accepted that the two weight BAMMA world champion was ready for the UFC at least 12 months ago. But in reality there couldn’t be a better time for ‘The Fire Kid’ to emerge from the flames of destruction he left behind him in Europe.

Known for his fan friendly all out war approach to fighting the French star carries with him a well rounded arsenal of skills that will surely shake up an already booming 135lb division. The bantamweights are a herd of hard hitting ferocious animals these days; just ask Dominick Cruz who lost his title in decisive fashion against the latest stud on the scene Cody Garbrandt.

Garbrandt faces former champion and former Alpha Male teammate TJ Dillashaw at UFC 213 this July in what should be a classic. Dillashaw lost the bantamweight crown to Cruz in a razor close decision last January but has bounced back with dominating victories over Brazilians Raphael Assuncao and John Lineker.

Expect Tom Duquesnoy to quickly announce himself to the division on Saturday night. Taking nothing away from Patrick Williams but Duquesnoy’s preparation for this moment couldn’t have been any better. He’s undefeated in four years with that sole defeat coming when he was only 19 years of age at the hands of current UFC featherweight Makwan Amirkhani.

Tom Duquesnoy lands a shot.Since then he’s been on a blaze of destruction taking out opponents with an array of different finishes. Slick submissions over Teddy Violet and Alan Philpott, an aggressive flurry of punches to Damian Rooney and a stunning elbow to take the BAMMA bantamweight title from Shay Walsh.

What to expect inside the octagon

At still only 23 years old there is plenty of room for improvement in the young Parisian. But that’s not to say he isn’t already ahead of the game for his age after five years of competition. The first thing that stands out when analysing Duquesnoy’s skill set is his aggression.

He will walk forward, get inside his opponents range and isn’t afraid to exchange with them. However this is calculated bravery on his behalf as he possesses a solid defence on his feet and can be deadly with counter strikes. Duquesnoy’s Muay Thai background is evident when watching him fight.

He is an expert in the clinch and often lands knees from this position in order to take the wind from his opponent’s sails as he sets them up for his type of gruelling fight. His clinch can also be fatal in a contest as learned by Shay Walsh when he was momentarily tied up before having his lights put out by an over the top technically beautiful elbow.

All the greats, especially in the lighter divisions, have a natural flow to their movement and Tom Duquesnoy is no different. Hand in hand with this is timing and his timing is impeccable whether it’s on the front foot or back foot. An example of this came at BAMMA 18 against Polish fighter Krzysztof Klaczekd.

Tom Duquesnoy against Krzysztof Klaczek.‘The Fire Kid’ had to endure a difficult first round against a solid opponent but the deeper the fight went the more Klaczek began to wear down. Duquesnoy’s fluid movement eventually became too much of a conundrum for Klaczek as he had an answer for everything the big Pole threw at him.

In the final round he grasped the momentum and turned on the style big time. Moving through the gears he oozed confidence and began to land some lovely shots. The end came when a desperate Klaczek threw some tired punches which Duquesnoy rolled with, sneaked inside and landed a perfectly timed knee to the liver that crippled his opponent.

That fight was at featherweight and one of three defences of the BAMMA featherweight title. Tom Duquesnoy is by no means a big bantamweight and we have even seen similar frames to his compete at flyweight. This gives you an insight into just how special this young fighter could become.

The last European to hold two world titles before crossing the pond to the bright lights of the UFC has did pretty well for himself. There is no reason why Tom ‘The Fire Kid’ Duquesnoy can’t go all the way to the top as well. Especially now as he is training under the guidance of world class coaching at Jackson-Wink MMA.

The evolution of this fighter is by no means complete and who knows what can happen in this crazy sport. But one thing for sure is that whatever happens in the remaining career of ‘The Fire Kid’ we are going to be entertained watching it. Beginning this Saturday night.
