It’s the age old question of does size matter yet asked for a completely different reason. How does a smaller fighter deal with larger opponents? Let’s take a glance into someone who already is, Kelvin Gastelum.

Khabib Nurmagomedov UFC 219 Training Camp in San Jose
Time for episode 4 in the Khabib Nurmagomedov UFC 219 training camp vlog series from San Jose. In this episode we get to hear from former UFC fighter Mike Swick. Who gives his thoughts on Khabib and this training camp. the winner of which will be in line to face whoever holds the UFC lightweight title.
Zubaira Tukhugov who is Khabib’s friend and sparring partner gives his opinion about the upcoming fight. While AKA head coach Javier Mendez wrestles with the Russia language. And tries to figure out who the latest people visiting the gym are.
Team captain and UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is in the building. And Khabib wants him to speak some Russian to Khabib fans back home. However, the is very reluctant after the last time he was fooled into saying something which made him look stupid. So he won’t be fooled again it seems.
Regardless, he is more than happy to let us know how the camp has been progressing. How good a shape Khabib is in and how he sees the fight playing out. Going on to say that Nurmagoimedov is the best lightweight fighter on the planet without a UFC title. But not for long he warns.
With the champion Conor McGregor currently on indefinite leave. And the interim champion Tony Ferguson currently nursing an injury. The next opponent for Nurmagomedov, should he win! Is as yet unclear. UFC 219 will tell us who the top contender in the division is, that is for sure. But anything more than that is still up for debate. The fight takes place as the co-main on the main card for Cyborg vs Holm.
Fans of mixed martial arts are most familiar with the former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm’s for her exploits inside the octagon. But long before Holm decided to try her hand at the sport. She was one of the most successful women’s boxers in the world. Who while competing from 2002 until 2013, held a host of titles including IFBA World Welterweight Title, WBA World Welterweight Title, WBC World Welterweight Title and the WIBA World Welterweight Title.
Training at Jackson Winkeljon in Albuquerque New Mexico, under the tutelage of Mike Winkeljohn. Holm honed her craft inside the walls of an MMA gym and the cage as opposed to a traditional boxing ring. So for her to have risen to such high levels in a sport, where for the most part she was training and competing in two very different environments is quite the achievement.
After making the decision to finally leave the sport of boxing behind and move into fulltime MMA competition. Holm’s last boxing fight took place in April 2013. As she looked to seal her final time inside the ropes with a successful defense of her IBA Super Lightweight Title and WBF Super Lightweight Titles. Her opponent on the night would be rising star, Mary McGee. Who at 21 – 1 as a professional looked to prove a tough test for the defending champion.
Cyborg vs Holm UFC 219
Holly Hom who is now regarded as one of the best mixed martial arts fighters in the world. Faces yet another tough test on December the 30th at UFC 219. When she contends the UFC featherweight title against the reigning defending champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino.
In what will no doubt be one of the toughest tests of her entire career. Should Holly overcome Cyborg, there can be doubting it will be the single biggest win, in either MMA or boxing.
Anthony “Rumble” Johnson talks about his favorite all-time UFC fights
Former UFC Light Heavyweight Title Contender, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson talks about his all-time favorite UFC Fights. Rumble sat down with Anatomy of a Fighter to discuss his top 3 fights which stood out for him through the years. You may nod your head in agreement or have to think back a little. As some are from many years ago. Tough question to answer when there have been so many throughout the years.
Go inside the lives and gyms of the stars of UFC 219: ferocious women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg and her opponent, former champion Holly Holm. An elite striker and strategist; plus 24-0 Khabib Nurmagomedov and knockout artist Edson Barboza.
Stalking the 145lb women’s division for more than a decade. Cris Cyborg now reigns supreme as the greatest women’s featherweight on the planet.
Outside of her first fight as a professional back in 2005, Justino has never tasted defeat. With a KO ratio of 89%, which is unheard of in women’s MMA. A stat any male fighter would be proud of! Cris has punched and submitted her way to the top.
Rarely if ever do we see a fighter being put before a division. But in Cyborg’s case, that is exactly what happened. Currently, Cris reigns supreme over a division which has no other athletes. Let’s say that again. Cyborg is the champ of a division in which officially, there are no other 145lb fighters!
In the rush to sign the most dominant female fighter on the planet. The UFC neglected to build a division in which she would compete.
And this is not the fault of Cris herself. It would appear from the outside that the UFC is simply dragging its heels on forming what will eventually become the conveyor belt for contenders. And even though there is no official top fifteen. There can be little doubting who is number one.
Cyborg’s Doping Controversy
Of course, we couldn’t, nor shouldn’t simply gloss over her doping infractions back in January 2012. When following her 16-second knockout of Hiroko Yamanaka, Cyborg tested positive for metabolites of the anabolic steroid stanozolol.
At a time when women’s MMA was struggling to be relevant, long before the arrival of Ronda Rousey on the world stage. Cyborg’s suspension sent shockwaves through the sport.
And it’s something which has followed the Brazilian ever since. Often being used as a stick to beat her over the head with whenever she stuck her head above the parapet. And called out the former bantamweight IT girl Ronda Rousey.
Now she faces yet another natural bantamweight in the fighter who beat the fighter, Holly Holm. And we could make all manner of arguments and comparisons, in terms of records and skillsets. But I’m not going there! Just to say that this should be a great fight, but a monumental test for Holm to overcome.
Cris Cyborg is many people’s eyes is the undeniable queen at 145lbs, across all promotions. And at UFC 219, she will look to once again prove it.
The UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg defeats challenger Tonya Evinger via TKO (Knees). At 1:56 of Round number 3 of their scheduled 5 round fight. She now defends her title against the former bantamweight champion Holly Holm at UFC 219. Holmmakes the jump up in weight to challenge Justino who hasn’t lost in over eleven years.
Cris Cyborg Stops Tonya Evinger via TKO Knees Jul. 29, 2017
The UFC media conference call with the two athletes competing for the women’s featherweight championship atUFC 219. Between the champion Cris Cyborg and the challenger Holly Holm. Which took place on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. PT/5 p.m. ET.
The reigning 145lb champion Cyborg looks to defend her title. Against former bantamweight champion Holm in her second defense of her championship. Holmmoves up to take on the seemingly invincible Justino who hasn’t lost in the sport for the last decade.
A tall order for a fighter who normally competes at the lower weight class. In a division which is sorely lacking natural 145lb fighters. If Holm can manage to overcome the division’s queen. There can be little doubting it will be the biggest win of her career to date.
The story of Ngannou is starting to become the stuff of legends. And his recent KO of Alister Overeem only added fuel to that legend. We will see if he can become a man that was battling homelessness and found a gym and changed his life.
Anatomy of a Fighter is an upcoming documentary about the life and culture of both of the MMA and Boxing community. This film will focus on the fighters, coaches and teams, who are competing for their legacy, family and love for the sports. This film will feature some of the very best fighters of all time from both boxing and MMA.
Volkan Oezdemir Training Jiu-Jitsu with Mario Sperry
Only days from the biggest fight of his life. Light heavyweight contender Volkan Oezdemir has been putting in Overtime for his bout against Daniel Cormier. Which will take place on January 20th, 2018 in Boston for UFC 220 for the 205lb Championship of the world.
Oezdemir is a fighter not many saw coming. Discounted by some on his way to challenging for the belt. IN the short space of six months. He racked up three wins inside the UFC octagon against Ovince St Preux, Misha Chirkunov. And at the time many people’s number one contender Jimi Manuwa. Who he made short work of with a stoppage inside the first minute of the first round.
Now Volkan finds himself on the cusp of the biggest fight of his career. Against one of the p4p greatest fighters in the sport. Who, it should be added, went to social media to ask fans who they believed should be next in line.
Oezdemir will be just one year and two weeks in the UFC when he takes on Cormier for the much-coveted title. Formerly heal by another one of the sports greats in Jon Jones. Can the Swiss Turk do what so many others, apart from Jones, have failed to do?
It’s a huge test and one we will be watching come January 20th, 2018, live from the TD Garden in Boston at UFC 220.
Stay tuned for more of this training camp as I release more content.

Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights
Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights
The Switch Science
Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford is known for his defensive skills, exceptionally fast hand speed, punching power. And ability to comfortably switch hit from orthodox to southpaw (though he is listed as orthodox).
In boxing and in MMA, switch-hitting refers to the ability to change boxing stances mid-fight. Between an orthodox and a southpaw stance.
In baseball, a switch hitter is a player who bats both right-handed and left-handed, usually right-handed against left-handed pitchers and left-handed against right-handed pitchers.
The combat sport approach to switch hitting isn’t usually as cut and dry, and with Crawford it is a scientific approach to superior angle dominance, often going southpaw against southpaws, due to it being the most rare of the stance differentials.
For long-time followers, you’ll know that I have an affinity for ambidexterity (as I myself am, as was my earliest combat sports influence, Marvin Hagler). It doesn’t mean the fighter is necessarily ambidextrous in all facets of life, but it is certainly something advantageous for the fighter.
Currently, Crawford is ranked as the world’s best active boxer, pound for pound, by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, second by The Ring (magazine), and third by E/S/P/N.

Cain Velasquez Back in the Gym at AKA Training, Always fun to watch🥊🥊
MMA and boxing trainer Dewey Cooper remembers the life of his good friend Robert Follis. Who he worked with most recently as a trainer for Kevin Lee. Follis who was one of the main trainers at Team Quest and Xtreme Couture passed away over the last few days. And Cooper was asked to give his thoughts on the man and trainer that he knew.
Dewey actually just spoke with Follis a few days before he passed away. Speaking at length about how he was feeling emotionally and mentally. They spoke about his plans for the future and how he hoped to open his own gym.
He talks about the relationship between top lightweight contender Kevin Lee and Follis. How his friendship and leadership brought him through some tough times. Giving Lee lots of great advice on how to progress in life and in the sport.
Dewey asks that anyone who is going through mental health issues needs to reach out to someone and ask for help.
Working with Follis, Cooper and he made many fighters better. Mixing his striking with that of Roberts ground knowledge, the pair made a great team. Always putting the fighters first, the two worked well together and never had any fallouts. With Follis on many occasions in interviews referencing Cooper as the best standup coach he worked with.
Now, Dewey who still trains Kevin Lee, will work toward achieving their goal of winning the UFC championship for Robert Follis. It’s a goal they had before he died and it’s something they intend to carry on.

Naseem Hamed KOs Kevin Kelley This Day December 19, 1997 and Retains the Featherweight Crown
The British are coming, the British are coming! Back in the 1990’s, British fighter “Prince” Naseem Hamed held both the IBF and WBO world featherweight boxing titles. He was widely regarded as one of the best p4p fighters on the planet, yet had never fought in the United States.
Undefeated at the time, the critics and fans wanted to see what the dynamic fighter from Yorkshire could do outside of the British Isles. So on December 19, 1997, Hamed stepped into the ring at Madison square garden New York. To take on Kevin Kelley and defend his Featherweight Crown.
In a classic back and forth fight, Hamed hit the canvas for the first time in his career. While also managing to floor Kelley. Coming into the fourth round, things were set up for a fight which looked like it could go either way.
But then in the last minute of the round, having just suffered a knockdown himself. Hamed bounced back to land a left which floored Kelley. As he struggled to make his way back to his feet, he couldn’t make the count.
And with that, Naseem Hamed had announced himself to the American audience. Yet another British fighter making his way across the pond to show he had what it takes to mix it up with the best away from home.
Hamed would continue his winning ways until 2001, when Marco Antonio Barrera would give him the only loss in his career. He would retire from the sport just one year later.
Fight Information
Naseem Hamed 126 lbs
Kevin Kelley 125½ lbs by KO at 2:27 in round 4 of 12
Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
Referee: Benjy Esteves Jr.

At UFC 217, Thug Rose Namajunas defeated the Boogey woman Joanna Jedrzejczyk. To become the UFC strawweight champion of the world. During the pre-fight buildup to the bout, Rose was seen to be reciting something to herself throughout her interactions with the undefeated champion.
We know now in retrospect that Namajunas was, in fact, repeating The Lord’s Prayer. In an effort to keep her mind clear and repel any and all of the psychological attacks by Joanna. And along with her obvious skill and talent. There can be little doubting that Roses’s tactic played a role in her own mental fortitude. And perhaps to a degree, the demise of Jedrzejczyk.
Who pre-fight from the outside, was unable to infiltrate Roses mind. Rendering one of her strongest weapons, useless. And even perhaps, even turning her own mind games and their lack of results, right back on her.
Upsetting the odds, Namajunas claimed the title with a stoppage in the first round. Shocking many around the world, who thought Jedrzejczyk was unbeatable. How much of a factor did the prayer play in the win, only Rose herself knows for sure.
And for us, the fight fans. Well, all we can do is sit back and admire her handy work inside the Octagon. Considering the bigger picture and the potential for power in prayer.
The Lords Prayer
Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.
Vasyl Lomachenko || The Matrix ReLoaded | Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights
“No más, la secuela.”
Vasyl Lomachenko, often referred to as “The Matrix” as a hat tip comparison to the classic film. In which the main character was capable of movement that exceeded human comprehension. So far as to dodge bullets. After Saturday’s win over fellow defensive wizard and master of movement Guillermo Rigondeaux, a “ReLoaded” study is in order.
The Matrix-like movement is used to create offence as well. Loma frustrates opponents with his surreal footwork and evasion, but isn’t technically a counter-puncher. He engages them offensively and at times seems superhuman in ability to quickly see paths of attack and escape.
This isn’t checkers, it’s speed chess.

‘The Rise of Thug Rose’
Rose Namujunas, aka ‘Thug Rose’ is a great tale in hard work and confident calm amidst the storm. Her ever improving striking under the tutelage of Duke Roufus. And now Trevor Wittman is what has made the difference in going from young and exciting prospect to young and exciting champion.
Here I break down her ‘3S’ approach to success; Striking, Scrambles, Submissions. Her cerebral and calculated chaos has been not only fun to watch. But also a handful for her opponents, losing only once via submission, and twice by decision in her career.
Thug Rose recently faced the SW Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 217. She came in as a big underdog against the undefeated champion. There was certainly a smell of bullying in the air leading up to the fight, and an almost odd and stoic response to JJ’s ways by Rose amidst it all.
However, Namajunas upset the MMA world when she knocked Jedrzejczyk down, once behind the ear and then again with a left hand. She won the fight by TKO in first round to be crowned the new UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion. This win earned Namajunas her second Performance of the Night bonus. This was Namajunas’ first knockout victory in her professional career, and is already considered one of the biggest upsets in UFC history.

Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux is an upcoming professional boxing match to be contested for the WBO super featherweight championship. The bout will be held on December 9, 2017 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Lomachenko and Rigondeaux are regarded as two of the best amateurs in history, with each boxer winning two Olympic gold medals.
On August 6, Bob Arum stated that Lomachenko would fight for a third time in 2017, likely on December 9th or 23rd. When asked who the potential options were, Arum stated, ”Well, there’s a few guys. Rigondeaux if he answers Dino (Duva’s) call. There’s (Orlando) Salido, who’s sniffing around and the third is (Miguel) Berchelt.” Arum also mentioned lightweight contender Ray Beltrán, but said he would like to capture a world title at lightweight before a potential fight with Lomachenko.
On August 14, Arum spoke to LA Times and confirmed either Rigondeaux or Salido would be Lomachenko’s next opponent. He stated if the bout with Rigondeaux was made, it would likely take place at The Theater at Madison Square Garden and a potential rematch with Salido would take place in Los Angeles. On August 21, Arum stated both camps were closing in on finalising a deal for December 9.
The Fight is Confirmed
On September 15, the bout between Lomachenko and Rigondeaux was confirmed. The fight between Lomachenko and Rigondeaux will take place at 130 pounds. On October 3, Arum stated there was less than a hundred tickets remaining and the event would go on to be the biggest live gate in the history of the Theatre. On November 18, Carl Moretti of Top Rank revealed a re-hydration clause on the contract.
Both fighters agreed to weigh in at 09:00 on the morning of the fight, where they would not be able to exceed 138 pounds. Any fighter over the limit would face a penalty of more than $10,000. On November 28, the WBA announced that Rigondeaux would lose his title at super bantamweight if he lost to Lomachenko.
WBA president Gilberto Mendoza Jr. went on to say if Rigondeaux defeats Lomachenko, he would have five days to decide whether he is to return to the division or stay at super featherweight. He stated that special permission was granted because the bout was ‘an important fight for boxing’. Upon receiving the news, Rigondeaux took to Twitter and stated he was disappointed.
On September 26, a promotional pre-sale began for tickets. Promoters, managers and boxers gave their thoughts on the fight.
“The Lomachenko versus Rigondeaux title fight is a signature event in the sport of boxing. It matches the two greatest fighters in Olympic boxing facing off against each other. Never before in boxing history have two boxers, each the winner of two Olympic gold medals, faced each other in a professional boxing match.”
