Brian T City Ortega || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights

Brian Ortega || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights

Brian Ortega, is an undefeated, 27 year old BJJ Black Belt under Rener Gracie. Though his path started with boxing (at 17, under the tutelage of James Luhrsen), he is now known / accepted as one of the very best submission artists in Mixed Martial Arts.

His nickname (T-City) even stems from his proclivity for triangle chokes.

With his title implicating fight coming up with Frankie Edgar (Breakdown Here: ), Ortega will certainly have his skills in all facets of the game tested. With Ortega known for finishing and Frankie Edgar never being finished, this fight is about as interesting as they come, and the winner likely in line for a title shot against Max Holloway.

I will breakdown some of Ortega’s striking, with a strong emphasis on the “how and why” he is able to get such a high percentage of finishes and submissions from everywhere. Let’s begin……

Tristar head coach Firas Zahabi answers some of your most popular questions and comments. On the highly anticipated upcoming UFC World Title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and the interim Tony Ferguson. In a fight which was postponed more times than we care to talk about.

If all goes to plan, it now looks as though we may finally get to see these two elite lightweights finally face off inside the UFC octagon. But will it be for the undisputed lightweight belt? Or, the interim title? It’s one of those grey areas we often find in life.

With an undefeated streak of 25 fights as a professional, Khabib should enter the fight as the favourite on paper. But Ferguson is not a fighter to be taken lightly and has captured the interim title for good reason.

Let’s see what coach Zahabi has to say on this outstanding matchup. And what we can expect from both fighter when the enter the cage at UFC 223.

Anderson Silva or: How to Tarnish a Legacy

Anderson silva former ufc champion.

Anderson Silva or: How to Tarnish a Legacy

Guest post by Ciro Crispino

The designation of G.O.A.T is never going to be a unanimous decision, but three or four years ago we at least had ourselves a strong consensus, as the “The Spider” Anderson Silva was coming off of the most impressive run in the history of the sport. He first stepped into the octagon on June 28, 2006 – after a decade bouncing around from cage to cage – knocking out the always game Chris Leben in the first round with a nasty knee. This earned him an immediate middleweight title shot in October of that year.

Some thought this opportunity came to soon, especially as the man wearing the belt was one of the most impressive fighters of the new era, Rich “Ace” Franklin. Despite his dominant debut, many still saw Silva as the underdog heading into the championship clash.

The Brazilian Muay Thai master came out at UFC 64 and destroyed the incumbent champion with his now trademark knees, utilising one of the most impressive plumb clinch games one can ever hope to see in MMA. If you didn’t know, now you probablydid.

What followed was seven years of abject dominance in the worlds leading MMA promotion. “The Spider” went 16-0 during this period, including ten title defences, and wins over world champions such as Vitor Belfort, Nate Marquart, Forrest Griffin and Dan Henderson. He also completely polished his game throughout his reign, bringing his ground game up the level of his already dazzling stand up skills. Look no further than his victory over Chael Sonnen at UFC 117; the greatest comeback win of all time, after getting dominated for five rounds and pulling out a miraculous triangle choke submission.

By 2013, Silva seemed unstoppable, destined to retire with his belt and ride off into the sunset as the best to ever do it. Then on July 6, 2013 at UFC 162 he fought Chris Weidman, some young upstart who didn’t have a chance.

Chris weidman defeats anderson silva ufc162.Things were pretty standard for the first round. Anderson was as elusive as ever, and Weidman didn’t seem to have what it took. We get to the second round and Anderson seems to be struck by either a temporary bout of madness or, perhaps more likely, a gross overestimation of his own physical capabilities. Silva dropped his hands and mocked Weidman’s inability to hit him with clean shots, then Weidman hit with some clean shots, and walked away with the middleweight strap.

It was a sobering demonstration of someone becoming a victim of their own success. The P4P best essentially gave his belt away with a stumble of his ego. Undeniably the worst way to lose on such a scale, and after such a run.

Anderson was given an immediate rematch six months later at UFC 168 – in one of the most anticipated rematches in MMA history. Silva would again fall in the second round. This time though, “The Spider’s” leg would snap on a checked leg kick, again producing a somewhat indecisive loss. Basically, Anderson had a nightmare of a year.

These things happen, and it’s not like two freak losses could really affect his standings in history; Anderson Silva could have retired then and there, his legacy intact. Regrettably though, he decided to come back.

An unfortunate commonality amongst elite fighters is their habit of going past their prime.Of course, it’s hard to say when that really is, as we have seen on a number of occasions with fighters finding success into their forties – Hendo and Couture being prime examples. And most of thesepeople have families, so they need to make a living. But I don’t feel like Anderson Silva falls into that bracket. He was so successful and made so much money, surely he could have walked away and been fine. Maybe it’s that ego we saw in the first Weidman fight.

Anderson silva against Nick diaz ufc 183.After a year on the shelf thanks to that horrific leg break, Silva returned on January 31, 2015 at UFC 183 to fight Nick Diaz. He pulled out a unanimous decision win over the Stockton native, but in one the most shocking drug pops ever, Anderson tested positive for androsterone and drostanolone, a pair of steroids.

Diaz would also test positive for marijuana, but… you know, it’s Nick Diaz. Despite Anderson’s assertions that the failed test was a result of atainted sexual enhancement drug – an excuse that would reoccur in another famous case some time later – the win was overturned to a no contest and Silva was slapped with a one-year ban from competition.

Again, Anderson Silva was presented with a chance to call it quits and get out with any dignity he had left. Instead, Silva opted to return in February 2016 to fight Michael Bisping in London, a fight he would lose by unanimous decision in perhaps the first decisive loss of his UFC career. Bare in mind, Silva is forty by this point, so some poor performances and drug test weren’t his only problems, his body was slowing down to boot.

Silva would fight again at UFC 200 in a short notice decision loss to Light Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, then again at UFC 208 in an extremely controversial decision win over Derek Brunson. For whatever reason he was still going.

Silva was scheduled to face young Kelvin Gastelum in Shanghai in November of 2017, and it’s hard to imagine what Silva had to gain from this fight. A win wasn’t going to put him anywhere near a title shot, and a loss to a natural welterweight would send him hurtling down the rankings. Not that this mattered though, because Anderson would never make it to China thanks to a second failed drug test.

Anderson silva profile picture. For many, myself included, this was the final nail in the coffin for Silva. One failed drug test can be argued, perhaps not convincingly, but it can be argued. Two? You have no legs left to stand on. Everything Anderson did, everything he accomplished throughout his career, has to be called into question; how can it not be? Before anyone can discuss if he is the G.O.A.T, they first must discuss whether he can even qualify. Andthis is compounded by the return of his closest competition: the squeaky-clean Georges St-Pierre.

If Silva had just stopped when he had the chance, he could have held on to his legacy with a firm grip, but now he finds himself desperately clutching at it. He says he isn’t done, but with a potential eight-year ban looming, the decision might no longer be his. It’s a classic fall from grace, and Silva finds himself as a modern Ozymandias, destined to be pointed to as an example for years to come. Israel The Last Stylebender Adesanya || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights

Israel The Last Stylebender Adesanya || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights

Israel The Last Stylebender Adesanya, is a 28 year old Mixed Martial Artist recently signed with the UFC. That has striking enthusiasts thrilled upon and his signing and subsequent debut.

He, along with others like Gokhan Saki, are making the exciting and infrequent transition from top-tier / upper-echelon striking, into the highest level of Mixed Martial Arts.

Adesanya is (intelligently) training under World Champion Black Belt in BJJ; Andre Galvao (ATOS) and Kickboxing Instructor Eugene Bareman (City Kickboxing). And at 6’3″ with an 80″ reach, and an extremely impressive striking pedigree. He makes for a very interesting addition to the 185 lb. division in the UFC. His 82-6-2 professional combat sport record, including a good stint for Glory Kickboxing. And a 12-0 record in MMA, his experience alone should make a lot of the hype justified, seemingly.

While he has flashed grappling in spots, most of what we have seen. Ergo will cover will be based upon his striking. Like many / most of my favorite strikers he has ambidextrous tendencies (in his case, very frequently). And utilizes his range, angular sense, and insane reflexes to often hit and not get hit.

DISCLAIMER: I disagree with the Jon Jones comparisons entirely. Israel is a striker turned mixed martial artist, Jon is a wrestler turned mixed martial artist. It’s not on me for pointing this out, perhaps it’s more on you for thinking it.

Mike Tyson || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights (w/ Narration)

Mike Tyson || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights (w/ Narration)

‘What We Can Learn From a Young Iron Mike Tyson / Kid Dynamite’

My reasoning for doing this is a few fold. Firstly, I grew up on a steady diet of combat sports, firstly with Marvin Hagler when I was very young and he was on his way out. While I loved and admired Hagler, I didn’t understand much of the complex nature of the sweet science.

In the early to mid 1980’s, there was no UFC, no MMA. The American Kickboxing scene was lethargic at best. So the baddest man on the planet was in fact better described as a man-child. Mike Tyson was getting national exposure before his 16th birthday. And at the time my father followed boxing as I do Mixed Martial Arts now.

So, while many of you could care less about how I got from A to B to now….I think the variety of influences, and diversity of the pugilists in my personal journey is important. If for nothing else than to better understand “the how”.

I see many a UFC fighter in today’s landscape that are akin to a soldier without proper command.
For every Mighty Mouse and Matt Hume or GSP and Firas. There is 1000 John Doe’s with all the talent and potential in the world. Just lacking an intelligent general, much like Cus, and even Kevin Rooney and Teddy Atlas were to Tyson.

Of course I will cover his technique, but the important lesson, especially with a young Tyson, is his willingness to learn, and yearning to perform well.

Enjoy everyone. Cheers.

Way back at the Summer Olympics of 2000, UFC middleweight contender Yoel Romero. Was wrestling at the very highest level for his home country of Cuba. Joey Diaz confirms Yoel Romero is Ogun.

Yoel Romero is Ogun Says Joey Diaz

Joey Diaz tells the hilarious story about how is able to get inside the head of Yoel Romero. Citing a weigh-in which he said he didn’t attend, because he would have gone off on Romero. Firing him up by using religion to get him motivated.

Joey states that Cuban’s are radicals when it comes to religion. And that by telling Romero he was Ogun, the Cuban God of metal. A mysterious muscular figure who lives deep in the Cuban jungles. Who only ever comes out fom the jungle when there is a problem to be solved.

Joey’s goes off in Spanish, rambling about what he would be saying to Yoel. He actually found himself in a similar situation with Anderson Silva. Who Joey’s says couldn’t take his eyes off him when he overheard him talking about Ogun.

Diaz talks about that whenever Cuban’s have a problem with machinery, they pray to their God of metal. It’s something which even predates Christianity according to Joey. And he reckons that if he had started saying to Yoel that he was the sun of Ogun. He would have gone psycho and thrown everyone of out the cage.

Joey says the whole thig would have been similar to that episode of the The Three Stooges. When Curly gets to smell the wild hyacinth, which sends him crazy for some reason. But he ends up knocking out some eighteen guys in the ring. Joey reckons that is how things would have played out that night inside the octagon.

Luke Rockhold Takes on The Boogeyman #UFC221

Luke Rockhold takes on Yoel Romero ufc 221.

Luke Rockhold vs Yoel Romero UFC 221

The upcoming middleweight clash at UFC 221 has all the trimmings of a true number one contender fight. As the former division champion Luke Rockhold, steps in to face off against the diviions boogeyman, Yoel Romero.

And although Romero is tipping the age scale at 40 years youn, the Cuban is still a force of nature. And outside of his decisison loss to the current champion Robert Whittaker. Romero, at one time, looked destined to crush all in his way and take the 185lb belt from whoever was keeping it warm.

Rockhold on the other hand was the guy who was going to reign supreme for a long time to come. Well, at least that is what he projected during the buildup to his second fight against Michael Bisping. Having made easy work of The Count in their first meeting. Anyone with a set of eyeballs could tell Luke was already looking past the Brit to greener pastures. And we all know what happened next.

Yoel Romero ufc middleweight challenger. That supposed blip on his self proclaimed ineveitable reign at the top has set Rockhold back over a year. With a hard fought win over former World Series of Fighting champion David Branch. Finally repositioning him for a shot at the divisions top dog.

Yoel in Perth

But now with Whittaker currently out of the picture and the shadow of Romero looming large over Perth. The former champion’s journey back to the title requires that he overtake Romero along the way. And with that, once again risk taking yet another one step forward and two steps back.

Things are now perfectly poised, as the true number one challenger to Whittaker’s reign finally gets decided on February 1ith. And with Rockhold’s self belief and Yoel’s battle with father time. It won’t be a minute too soon for either man.
