Mike Tyson Beats Mitch Green May 20, 1986 MSG NYC

Mike Tyson vs Mitch Green May 20, 1986 Entire Fight HD

In the era we now live in where animosity amongst combatants is often manufactured for the masses.  Mike Tyson against Mitch Green back on May 20, 1986. Was the perfect example of two guys who had outside the ring problems, settled inside the ropes.

“Blood,” as he was referred to on the streets of Harlem New York. Was a well known street gang leader and a lifelong enemy of fellow New Yorker Tyson. The two sworn enemies would eventually face off in their 1986 heavyweight clash at Madison Square Gardens NYC. Where the undefeated youngest heavyweight champion in history, Tyson. Would defend his titles against the 6’5″ strong man Green.

In a back and forth fight which went the full 10 rounds. Green managed to do what very few ever did and avoided being stopped by the ferocious Tyson.

Street Fight

The fight however would not quench the tension between the two. And just two years later, an incident involving the two men in the early hours of the morning in Greens home territory of Harlem. Would only help to solidify their urban legend.

Tyson had arrived in the early hours to pick up his new personalised white leather jacket from a tailor store, known as Dapper Dan’s. Green who always had one ear to the street, heard Tyson was in his neighbourhood and soon arrived on the scene to confront his former opponent.

The resulting melee left Green with a severe cut to his forehead and a closed left eye. While the heavyweight champion of the world Mike Tyson. Would later be disgnosed with a fractured right hand. Delaying his upcoming fight against British fighter Frank Bruno.

It would be the current President of the United States Donald Trump, who at the time was advising Tyson. Would go on to broker a deal between the Tyson and Bruno camps, for a rescheduling of their fight.

It’s no wonder that to this day, the antics between these two boxers which happened outside the ring. Stick more in the public’s psyche than that which occurred inside.

Tyson vs Green the Fight Stats

    • Mitch Green 225 lbs

Tyron Woodley || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights •

Tyron Woodley || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights •

Tyron ‘The Chosen One’ Woodley is the current UFC Welterweight champion whose last loss was almost exactly 4 years ago to current Bellator WW King Rory Macdonald. Rafael Dos Anjos will be facing off with Colby Covington for an interim championship at 170 lbs, winner gets (in theory) Woodley next.

In a day of so many loud, clueless voices in MMA, I’ve felt a need to be somewhat of a voice of reason amidst analytical work. If people don’t gel with a fighters gimmick and / or fighting style, I get it,, and you’re not going to root for everyone etc. My issues are mostly based upon a lack of knowledge determining said opinion, hence making videos like “Reality Check…” recently.

So…with that in mind, is T-Wood “just another wrestler with an overhand right”? Let’s delve…….cheers.

"Quitting" - Raquel Pennington and The Fighter's Dilemma

Quitting Raquel Pennington and The Fighter's Dilemma

“I’m Done. I Want To Be Done.”

“I’m Done.” An abrasive blend of consonants and vowels for any fighter, and one uttered by Raquel Pennington at UFC 224.  At the end of the fourth, the Colorado native turned to her head coach and verbally capitulated; to put it bluntly, she was quitting. Cornerman Jason Kutz had two choices: acquiesce or encourage. He chose the latter, and I thought to myself “oh boy, this is going to cause a bit of a fuss”. Well, a fuss it certainly caused.

Social media was awash with commentary; every MMA fighter and pundit had an opinion, and most of them proclaimed it fervently. It’s easy to understand a flaring of emotions when a fighter’s health and well being is thrust into the spotlight. We now live in a time where the effects of a beating are more understood and sympathised with, and the gung ho days of yesteryear are thankfully petering out. Take a look at my Justin Gaethje article to see an expansion on this point.

As a result, a coach not allowing their fighter a way out when they are mentally finished is rightfully going to stir debate. While it’s certainly romantic to think of someone dire straits, then getting an intense pep talk from their – ideally older and gravel voiced – mentor and coming back to win the day, it just doesn’t align with the modern perception of fighting. “I see three of him out there.” “Hit the one in the middle”. Very witty line, but the fight probably should have stopped. Unfortunately, what we got at UFC 224 was a perfect example of reality interrupting proceedings.

“Somebody Stop The Damn Match”

Amanda Nunes following win.

Pennington was getting completely shut down in almost every exchange. She’s as tough as they come and I’m sure quitting doesn’t come naturally to her, but Amanda Nunes looked like a freight train with no signs of slowing. “Rocky P” had lost all four rounds and had no apparent path to victory. So, when she went back out for the fifth, the now both mentally and physically diminished fighter crumbled, left in a pool of her own blood. Given the brief but illuminating exchange in her corner, this TKO became substantially more uncomfortable than usual. The fighter demonstrated she no longer wanted to fight, yet she was convinced to continue and took a significant pummelling for her troubles.

A few things have come to light in the aftermath. On the MMA Hour, Pennington explained that her right leg had been severely damaged after Nunes’ first leg kick. The Brazilian caught her right on the spot of a previous injury and the pain was enough to make Raquel want to vomit. This plagued her throughout the encounter and was a primary factor in mental vacancy going forward. Her coaches were aware of this to an extent, but didn’t quite realise how much it was bothering her.

Two Sides To Every Story

Raquel Pennington loses to Nunes.

Pennington vehemently believes her coach made the right decision, and she would have regretted it had she given up. It’s easy to make the argument that of course she would say that. Isn’t it down to Raquel though? If I could be banal for a moment, no two coach/fighter relationships are the same; no two human relationships are the same for that matter. If Pennington trusts her coach, shouldn’t she determine if he correctly assessed the situation? None of us were in there, so we can’t know; not really.

On the other hand, one could argue that her coach should have been able to end the fight in spite of any future lament from his fighter. To protect her from herself if I may use the cliché. It is an important and complex topic, with a host of variables in any given context. It should be discussed, but I think to attack a coach with any amount vitriol is rather unfair.

One Minute To Make The Right Call

One minute is how long the man had to deal with the situation. A situation he likely had never been in before or even expected to be in. While the focus, of course, should be on Pennington’s welfare, her coach is only human. What would you do? It’s easy to accumulate all the factors and calculate your reaction in hindsight. Kutz had one minute to decide whether or not to pull the plug on the potential realisation of Pennington’s lifelong goal. Someone he presumably cares about.

The problem is, we live in a world where perception and archetypes reign supreme. I mentioned Rocky before. Imagine if Rocky had told Micky that he was done, and Micky immediately said “okay, the fight’s over.” That would completely contradict the very spirit of the film. As Pennington turned to her corner after getting dominated for twenty minutes and said “I’m done” it’s so easy to fall into a role.

As people – and especially as sports fans – we love the narrative. It’s a chicken or the egg situation; we see these stories that inspire us and teach us. Is that real life informing art, or the other way around? Under high pressure conditions, most of us like to believe we can dig down and gut it out. Like Rocky or any other babyface protagonist did. It seems like the right thing to do, and sometimes it is. Sometimes when you want to quit, you don’t really need to quit. In an instant, how does one deduce if we’re living on a silver screen, or if the real world is about to violently intrude upon us?

The Stigma Of Quitting

A battered Raquel Pennington loses to Nunes.

The rear-view is clear, and I can tell you that I now believe the fight should have been stopped. Pennington had virtually no recourse and was in immense physical pain. She was mentally done, and when the mind’s gone, the body follows. Unnecessary punishment is the bane of combat sports, and it is truly wonderful that so many are concerned to see it end. But quitting has that stigma, one perpetuated by the poetic pontifications of thinkers and artists. However, sometimes quitting takes far more courage than battling on, especially when the world is watching. Sometimes it’s frankly foolish to push on.

Miyamoto Musashi said, “Truth is not what you want it to be; it is what it is, and you must bend to its power or live a lie.” Hopefully one day we can all bend to truth’s power, but until then, let’s not forget that mistakes are made and we can do nothing but learn from them.

Badr Hari || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights •

Badr Hari || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights •

Badr Hari, one of the most enigmatic, talented, and popular fighters in Kickboxing / Combat Sports history, is also one of it’s most controversial. While I don’t really cover things like what is “required to destabilize the cerebellum and neuro cortex”. Or other Deepak Chopra approaches to unarmed combat, I will make a long-winded…

DISCLAIMER: I do not condone or celebrate Badr’s behavior in or outside of the ring. Though it’s irrelevant to the video. I am not your shrink, nor am I a judge of moral compass, someone else’s brain, life experience and / or character. I make videos about technique, and celebrate what to my eyes is good technically.

The fighters whom I cover may as well be silhouettes. I try to walk on the fence, crazy like a fox, and entertain the like-minded fans of the technical elements of martial arts in a real setting. Set to an often abstract video presentation, with actual/written technical oversight. When you are younger and competing etc.

You tend to look less deeply into character “you” may as a coach, with some more eyes on you. AKA, I’m not other channels. I don’t do this for popularity, and I’m selling you zero snake oil. This is the right athlete / personality to make this statement about.

SO………with that said, I was always a huge fan of Badr Hari’s technique, in particular some of the earlier years where he focused more on having an arsenal than a power punching brawler. And while there was a method to the madness (normally), again I’m not going to delve into some pseudo-psychology, I’m presenting you with some wonderful technique, if you’re not a fan of the man to the point of critiquing my work, why are you here?

On a lighter note, let’s have some fuckin fun with this eh? Cheers….

10 Fights to Show to a Non-Fight Fan: Part 2

Robbie Lawler takes on Rory MacDonald.

10 Fights to Show to a Non-Fight Fan: Part 2

A fight is like anything else produced in collaboration for the consumption of the masses. Hopefully, we can take things from them that make us better, in whatever form that takes. I could go on and on talking about memorable fights, and I’ll likely do a sequel to this at some point, but for now, here’s part 2 of “10 Fights to Show to a Non-Fight Fan”. If you didn’t catch part 1, you can find it here. Now, let’s talk about some classic hand-to-hand combat.

As before, all fights are available to watch on UFC Fight Pass

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Mirko Filipovic

Pride FC: Final Conflict 2003

September 11th, 2003

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Mirko Filipovic.“Minotauro” Nogueira was a grappler through and through, revered to this day for his mastery of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The man standing opposite him in the Tokyo Dome that night was the antithesis of that. Cro Cop was one of the most feared strikers in the world, possessing the deadliest kicks in the game.

For the first ten-minute round Cro Cop picked apart Nogueira on the feet, sprawling whenever the Brazilian tried to execute a take down and fight the fight he wanted. Mirko even landed a nasty head kick at the end of the round, dropping Minotauro, who would be saved by the bell.

In the second round, Minotauro wouldn’t wane in his insistence on having a good old grapple and would finally complete a take down. What followed was the former kickboxer Cro Cop drowning with the Jiu Jitsu ace on top of him, eventually surrendering the arm and capitulating to the referee.

It’s a fascinating fight to see the early dynamic of striker vs grappler play out in real time. It should be clear after watching this why people simply had to evolve and get good everywhere. This also serves as an example of why in fact grappling is so important, and not just “stalling” or “pointless” as some might see it.

Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm UFC 193

November 15th, 2015

Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm UFC 193.One of the top biggest upsets in the history of the sport, this night down under saw the end to a historic title reign, and the start of a period of transition and growth for women’s MMA. Holm entered the fight as the underdog of all underdogs. Despite a stellar boxing career, she was very inexperienced in MMA. Rousey was the biggest star in the sport and was holding onto a shiny zero next to her twelve wins, six of those being UFC bantamweight title defences. The Olympic judoka was a monster, arm baring everyone put in front of her.

When the bell rang, the odds, tale of the tape and public perception disappeared in the squall of reality. Ronda Rousey, being a high-level grappler, tried to stand and trade with an elite boxer in Holm. Her trainer, Edmond Tarverdyan, had long been saying that “the Rowdy One” had the hands to match any high-level boxer, and now was her chance to prove it. She didn’t and was subsequently cut down by Holly in the second round with a head kick. The crowd and commentary team, long caught up in the Ronda Rousey whirlwind, exploded in a chorus of shock and awe. The legacy of Ronda Rousey is a complex and dichotomous beast of a topic, so we’ll leave that for another time. But, the fall from grace started here, and likely could, and should, have had a far softer landing.

Benson Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis 1 WEC 53

December 16th, 2010

Benson Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis 1 WEC 53.I can’t think of a fight that better encapsulates the very idea of a classic fight. This five-round war has everything. From the ground, to the clinch, to the stand-up, it’s nothing but high-level work rate. Henderson and Pettis will go down as two of the best lightweights to ever put on a pair of four-ounce gloves, and they painted their Sistine Chapel as a duo.

Of course, there’s the “showtime kick”. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, do yourself a favour and don’t google that. Just watch the fight and see if you can guess what the “showtime kick” is when it happens.

Nick Diaz vs. Paul Daley

Strikeforce: Diaz vs Daley

April 4th, 2011

Nick Diaz vs Paul Daley Strikeforce.I could write an entire piece on why Nick Diaz is such an essential part of the sport; in fact, I did. This fight, however, works as a good introduction to Stockton’s favourite son. Most times, when you sit down to watch an anticipated fight, you want it to go a decent amount of time. This battle completely eschews that desire, only lasting four minutes and fifty-three seconds, and believe when I say that’s all you need.

Bell to bell, this was chaotic action in the best way, making it – for this writer’s money – the best one round fight of all time. It gets to a point pretty quickly where either man could have been knocked out cold at any moment. This pace was Diaz’s modus operandi. He frequently engaged in fights that you knew were never gonna let up for a moment. Unless, of course, he was fighting GSP, but we can hardly blame Nick for that can we?

Robbie Lawler vs Rory MacDonald 2 UFC 189

July 11th, 2015

Robbie Lawler vs Rory MacDonald 2 UFC 189.What is the definition of art?  If it isn’t the expression of individuals for the consumption and – hopefully – the enrichment of others, then what is it? Fighting, for me, is the ultimate and most dynamic prism through which to view people. Their characters, their flaws, their strengths, their wills, wants and needs. In July of 2015, Robbie Lawler and Rory McDonald stepped into a cage and endeavoured to best one another in an athletic competition in order to secure the UFC welterweight championship of the world.

What followed was the purest form of expression two humans could hope to produce. Both men bared their souls to the world on that night. It’s difficult to put into words what one draws from watching such a display, but I feel that I understand the world a little better having seen these two fighters drain themselves in the name of prosperity and legacy. Fights often reach a point where technique and skill level are relegated to the background, and heart, grit and desire – the humanity in all of us, trained fighter or otherwise – takes the centre stage. Robbie Lawler and Rory McDonald are two men who don’t know how to quit; who don’t know how to give anything other than their best.

When the final bell rang I felt I knew these men far better than I did before the first bell rang. Robbie Lawler took a beating, but wouldn’t, nay, couldn’t give up. Rory MacDonald, despite his toughness and determination couldn’t make his body keep up with his will power. He crumbled to the floor, weighed down by his blood and sweat. With a battered but victorious Robbie Lawler standing over him. Both fighters are skilled, but it was sheer resolve that created such a memorable display that bloody night in Vegas. I felt I understood both men better after watching this, and in turn, understood what it takes to be the best version of yourself. If that isn’t art, then what is?

Thanks for reading. Hopefully I’ve given that person you know, or even you, the reader, some food for thought. Let us know if you have any suggestions relating to the topic.

10 Fights to Show to a Non-Fight Fan: Part 1

Ricardo Lamas fights Max Holloway UFC.

We All Know That One Guy

We all know that one person. “It’s too brutal”, “what’s with all the hugging?”, “they’re just people who couldn’t get to the top in their individual disciplines” (someone actually said this to me once). Whatever the reason provided, they just don’t get the fight game. Well, I believe that MMA is the purest form of competition, and a kaleidoscopic lens through which to view character, and in turn, life.

I’ve put together a list of fights you can show to your unbelieving friend to coax them over to the light side. Or if you are that person and you just can’t wrap your head around it, hopefully these few bouts will shed some light on the merits of this wacky and wonderful sport.

Note: this isn’t a list of the best fights ever, but more a collection of fights demonstrating the various aspects of the sport that inspire us to keep coming back, and put the “art” in “mixed martial arts”.

All fights are available on UFC Fight Pass

Robbie Lawler vs. Melvin Manhoef Strikeforce: Miami

January 30th, 2010

Robbie lawler fights Melvin ManhoefOne of the great comeback flash knockouts of all time. To put it bluntly, Lawler was getting his arse handed to him for a good three minutes. Out struck at every instance, and with his leg being torn to pieces, “the Ruthless One” through a gambit of a right overhand and knocked Manhoef out cold.

The enthusiasm of commentator Mauro Ranallo goes a long way to cement this a classic moment in MMA. No sport is more dynamic, with countless options presented to the fighters at any given moment. This proves that you really never know when something special is about to happen, and any fight can light the arena up.

Darren Elkins vs. Mirsad Bektic UFC 209

March 4th, 2017

Darren Elkins crazy stoppage of Mirasd Bektic.

I could do an entire article on Darren Elkins, but this fight does a good job of summing him up. Mirsad Bektic was younger and technically better than Elkins in every area, and as such was dominating the man from Hobart, Indiana for two and half rounds.

They don’t call Elkins “the Damage” for nothing though – he wears it better than anyone, and was able to rally late in the third to knock Bektic out to the thunderous ovation of the Vegas crowd.

There is no gutsier man in sports than Elkins, if he even is a mortal man. He’s all heart and he consistently comes back from one sided beatings to get the win. Listen to his guttural roar after this bout to see the true spirit of a fighter. Elkins is the man, and I can’t wait to see him fight again.

Also, I’m becoming increasingly suspicious that the chest tattoo is in fact the source of his powers.

Quinton Jackson vs. Ricardo Arona Pride FC: Critical Countdown 2004

June 20th, 2004

Rampage Jackson ko's Ricardo Almeda.

Here we have an example of what can happen when you commit too much to your grappling. Arona is a truly incredible grappler, with credentials in the submission arts too numerous to begin mentioning here. Suffice to say, he attempted to rely on his mastery of the ground to submit Rampage.

He came close, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. After locking in a tight triangle choke, Jackson decided to forgo any technical escapes he may have learnt in training, and pick Arona up and drive his skull through the centre of the Earth. He didn’t quite go that far, but Ricardo was out cold.

For anyone who might claim grappling is the lesser half of the MMA equation, I put to you that it is in fact the most dynamic. When you add grappling to a fight, the number of outcomes and possibilities becomes nearly endless, as you can see here. What was perhaps becoming a “boring” encounter, with Rampage sat in Arona’s guard, erupted into one of the most memorable finishes in the sport’s history. This is the power of grappling, and I’ll take a bit of wall and stall or lay and pray any day if we get moments like this.

Randy Couture vs. Pedro Rizzo UFC 31

May 4th, 2001

Randy Couture fights Pedro Rizzo.

Pedro Rizzo kicks hard. Like, really hard. There was a moment in the second round here where “the Rock” kicked Couture in the ribs as he was coming in for a takedown, folding him over like paper. That moment served as a microcosm of the fight as a whole.

Pedro attempted to use his explosive striking to keep the Greco-Roman wrestler at bay, with Couture doing his best to weather the storm and secure enough control time to take the fight, which he did, albeit narrowly.

This back and forth functions as a vertical slice of the sport, showing two specialists paying for their individual deficits. Both men would develop, but Couture would be the one to become the more complete competitor. Compare this performance to his Heavyweight title victory against Tim Sylvia six years later. It’s like night and day; a true growth arc of an athlete.

Max Holloway vs. Ricardo Lamas UFC 199

June 4th, 2016

Ricardo Lamas swings with Max Holloway UFC.

This is one of the best fights ever, solely owing to its final ten seconds. The majority of the fifteen-minute run time saw a fairly dominant and technical corralling of Lamas by Holloway. Being young, brash, and apparently not content with an unremarkable day at the office, Max threw down the gauntlet. The final ten second clapper sounded, and he stepped into the centre of the octagon, then pointed to the ground. Lamas somehow knew exactly what Holloway was getting at, and the pair proceeded to swing their arms at each other like a couple of wacky waving inflatable tube men.

It’s difficult even now – after so many viewings – not to feel a rush when watching it, with the crowd going nuts. What I find so interesting about this exchange, beyond the hedonistic extravagance of it all, is the ten second look we get into the soul of two true fighters. Lamas didn’t hesitate when Max pointed to the ground. He knew what was about to happen. These fighters, they speak a language we don’t understand – couldn’t possibly understand – with their fists and blood and sweat. Holloway was in a comfortable lead on the score cards, but elected to risk his chin for the sheer joy of it. To fight a man toe to toe, hell for leather, and to create magic.

So, that’s the end of part 1. Return soon for part 2, where we look at some more amazing fights.

Kevin The Motown Phenom Lee || Guard Passing Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights

Though this breakdown is more of a focus on how Kevin Lee gets to full mount, and also take his opponents backs, this was the best I could do for a title. From his transition against Michael Chiesa to his recent fight with Edson Barboza, Lee certainly has a propensity for getting to two of the most superior positions from an MMA grappling standpoint.

People often ask for voice-over work, and because my software is horrendous, I tried to take a page out of BJJ Scout’s book (though I’m not British).

Enjoy and let me know what you think, FYI this took the time of what two breakdowns would normally.

Max Holloway vs Brian Ortega Promo | UFC 226

Max Holloway vs Brian Ortega Promo | UFC 226

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway will attempt to defend his title against Brian Ortega at UFC 226 on July 7 in Las Vegas. UFC president Dana White confirmed the 145-pound title fight to ESPN on Friday. The UFC 226 pay-per-view event will take place at T-Mobile Arena.

Holloway (19-3) will be seeking his second defense of the featherweight championship. The 26-year-old Hawaiian is riding a 12-fight win streak dating to 2013.

Earlier this month, Holloway tried to accept a lightweight title fight on short notice against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 but wasn’t able to make weight. Nurmagomedov went on to claim the lightweight title by defeating Al Iaquinta.

Holloway will now turn his attention back to Ortega (14-0), who earned a featherweight title shot by knocking out Frankie Edgar at UFC 222 in March.

Fighting out of Southern California, Ortega is 6-0 in the UFC, with six finishes.

A heavyweight super fight between defending champion Stipe Miocic (18-2) and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier (20-1) will headline UFC 226.

Dillon Danis MMA Debut Highlights Breakdown

Unlike (former?) rival Garry Tonon, Dillon Danis didn’t spend much time on his feet in his MMA Debut at Bellator 198. The young yet accomplished grappler, who learned his ways via all-time great Marcelo Garcia prior to joining SBG Ireland. Home gym of John Kavanaugh, and for the extra casual, Conor McGregor as well.

While speculation of a fight between Danis and Ben Askren seems all the rage on social media. Let’s just do what we do here and breakdown the “how” in regards his recent MMA debut.
