Israel Stylebender Adesanya || Champion of the Torch || Breakdown • Film Study • Highlights ᴴᴰ

Israel Adesanya, Breakdown, Film Study, Highlights, UFC Champion

Stylebender took 17 fights (with 0 defeats), 14 months (in the UFC), and a 5th round sent to us mortals by the MMA gods to shine brightest under the biggest lights he had seen to date.

Kelvin Gastelum, who himself was lined up for a title fight with Robert Whittaker, was as game as they come in making the fight a 5 round contest. If we assume Kelvin won rounds 1 and 4, and Israel 2 and 3, then the long journey from Nigeria to the present came down to 5 minutes. While I could certainly breakdown all rounds and some subtle nuance along the way, I want to focus on the 5th round. It was the making of legend and one of the greatest title fights I’ve seen in the UFC (and I’ve missed somewhere between 0 and 5).

Israel acknowledged Kelvin’s great boxing savvy, in particular, his jab, but went on to say “You need fights like that in your back pocket, but like I’ve always said, destiny is an understatement. The next fight, I will make it memorable”. Well, how anyone could forget that last one escapes me, but I admire the moxie.

“Truth, like a torch, the more it’s shook it shines.” said William Hamilton. If Stylebender is in line to carry the torch that Anderson Silva once made the middleweight division shine, then he is indeed the truth.

Gregor "The Gift" Gillespie || Breakdown • Film Study • Highlights ᴴᴰ

Gregor “The Gift” Gillespie || Breakdown • Film Study • Highlights ᴴᴰ

Gregor “The Gift” Gillespie is an American former collegiate wrestler and professional mixed martial artist. As I type, the undefeated (13-0 with 6 Knockouts and 5 Submissions) LIMMA (Long Island MMA, I’ve trained there, is nice) fighter is ranked #11 in the official UFC lightweight (155 lb) rankings.

Though his flawless record has quite a few knockouts, what stands out to most is certainly his frenetically paced wrestling ability and credentials. He wrestled for Edinboro University, where he was a four-time NCAA Division I All-American and won a national championship in 2007.

I’m often asked whom I think would be the toughest test for Khabib, and because Tony Ferguson is the type of dude that is hard to fight because he mashes all the buttons, I think the answer, potentially, is “The Gift”.

Vasyl Lomachenko & The Bushido Way || Breakdown • Film Study • Highlights ᴴᴰ

The Celebration, and Visual Representation of Bushido.

-DISCLAIMER- I realize that Anthony Crolla wasn’t Loma’s toughest test, but it happens to be most recent. This video is a celebration of what makes Vasyl so uniquely his own, and of course some technical analysis of the aforementioned contest.

Bushidō (武士道, “the way of warriors”) is a Japanese collective term for the many codes of honor and ideals that dictated the samurai way of life, loosely comparative to Western sense of chivalry.

The “way” originates from the samurai moral values, most commonly stressing some combination of sincerity, frugality, loyalty, martial arts mastery, and honor until death.

Naoya Inoue 'The Monster' || Breakdown • Film Study • Highlights ᴴᴰ

Naoya Inoue ‘The Monster’ || Breakdown • Film Study • Highlights ᴴᴰ

Naoya Inoue (井上 尚弥) the prodigious Japanese boxer, is a three-weight world champion. Nicknamed “The Monster”, Inoue is known for his devastating punching power and brutal body attacks. Inoue is ranked as the world’s best junior-bantamweight by The Ring magazine, and also currently ranked as the world’s sixth-best active boxer, pound for pound, respectively.

At only 25 years old, and a record of 17-0 with an absurd 15 KO’s (many in the early rounds) amidst competing at anywhere from 108 to 118 pounds (max), Naoya is setting the “lighter weight” boxing world on fire with a combination of speed and power very rarely seen from someone 5’5″ 110 lbs.

In regards to his skill set, grounded in excellent fundamentals offensively and defensively, his jab has laser accuracy, and his body work is already the making of legend. In (western) boxing it is vital to build on a foundation of 101’s in the quest of exploiting and extrapolating from any potential outlier ability. Without his balanced footwork, incredible jab, and defence he wouldn’t get the chance to show off his freakish power. If you’ve read this far, I’d think watching the video would better make sense of it all for you, let’s begin, shall we?

Masvidal vs. Till || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights ᴴᴰ

“A man must have a code…..”

1st was Dutch Kickboxing vs. (Real?) Muay Thai, and now I’ll further make my point about the importance of boxing/hand technique in MMA. Last weekend, in a highly anticipated fight between Darren Till and Jorge Masvidal, we saw fireworks of grand finale proportion to start and finish (2 times if the 3 piece & Soda are included) the match.

Here I will just do a quick analysis of how Masvidal set up the finishing sequence and as tempting as it likely avoids the post-fight skirmish. Without giving anything away, nor further ado….

Islam Makhachev || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights ᴴᴰ

Islam Makhachev || Breakdown • Skill Study • Highlights ᴴᴰ

Islam Makhachev, a 27 year old Russian mixed martial artist, judoka and sambo competitor (of Lak origin) is a Combat Sambo World Champion, and competes in the lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He trains with AKA before his fights, usually accompanied with Khabib Nurmagomedov and his fight team.

Winning his last two fights early in the first round, one via KO and another with a wonderful arm bar, Islam’s strength is in his versatility, coaching and training partners alike. While covering prospects (from Diakese to Adesanya and Zabit) can be tricky, I have developed an obvious fascination with Eastern Bloc style grappling and approach to mixed martial arts.

FUN FACT: Makhachev has absorbed the least significant strikes per minute, in UFC history (@ 0.74)

So without making the breakdown solely liner notes, let’s get to it…

Seeing the positives in the Robbie lawler vs Ben Askren finish

The long awaited debut of ben askren

Ben Askren ONE Championship champion.

UFC 235 marked the long, long awaited debut of the “funky” one, Ben Askren. The 2008 Olympian and college wrestling great spent years dominating in every cage not owned by Zuffa, and for the longest time it seemed like he’d never sign with the world MMA leader. When he stepped in the cage with former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler, we would soon learn if he belonged on this stage. While we saw plenty, closure eluded us.

Seeing Askren in the octagon was a novelty, but the novelty was soon to fade, violently. Askren was as cool as a cucumber, and Lawler looked as ready to murder a man as ever. The pieces were in place for a meaningful fifteen minutes. Askren came out in a karate stance and threw three consecutive probing wheel kicks… Okay, so he immediately shot for a takedown.

Robbie Lawler, ever the technician, hoisted Askren up in the fireman’s carry position and drilled him, afro first, into the canvas. “Funky” was all out of sorts as “Ruthless” lived up to his name, slamming leather into the Olympian’s grill. A stoppage seemed close, but Askren managed to gather himself and get back to his feet, albeit bloody and battered. Askren hadn’t taken any significant damage in a fight in years, and Robbie decided to play catch-up.

Where the big boys play

Ben lurched forward, arms outstretched like a zombie following its basic instincts. He just wanted a clinch, which he eventually got as Lawler backed up to the cage. Questions about the quality of Askren’s opposition and his ability to overcome adversity had just been answered, regardless of what was about to happen. He weathered a storm, and a Robbie Lawler storm is unlike any other. He then managed to get the fight back where he wanted it.

Askren eventually got Lawler to the ground and looked to threaten a rear-naked choke, but Lawler snuck out the back. Being a grappler with a noted vice like grip, “Funky” held on to what he could – Robbie Lawler’s head. Askren squeezed for dear life and Robbie was in trouble, but he seemed to be hanging in there. Then, his arm dropped, and Herb Dean, the referee, waved off the fight. Lawler popped up in protest as Askren celebrated his first UFC victory.

One of the most anticipated fights of the year, featuring one of the most anticipated debuts ever ended with a confused whimper. It’s difficult to bury the ref too deep, as it did briefly appear that Robbie might have been unconscious. The commentators proclaimed so in the moment, and sat at home watching on TV it wasn’t obvious he was still awake. Nevertheless, he got right back up with zero hesitation or grogginess – he was not out.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda

Robbie Lawler (red gloves) and Ben Askren (blue gloves) during UFC 235.

Whether he was about to go out, or if he could have broken Askren’s grip is a different matter. “I wasn’t letting go”, Ben told media members at the post fight presser. True, surely, why would he have let go? But, It’s hard to tell from the camera angle if the choke was under chin. As colour commentator Joe Rogan pointed out however, you can choke a man out with a squeeze around the head if it’s tight enough. Ultimately, we’ll never know what could have happened, and the result won’t be overturned because results are never overturned because athletic commission’s gonna athletic commission.

We can’t change what happened, but what we can do is take positives from the situation. This was a “I don’t want to see either person lose” fight for a lot of people. Lawler is a perennial fan favourite with a dichotomous appeal. Within the confines of the octagon he is a wild man with a brutal back catalogue of wars, but outside he remains a soft spoken everyman. After the controversial call he sprung to his feet spitting venom, but within seconds he was shaking hands with the referee; “Sh*t happens”, he said in a post fight interview.

Askren quickly generated fans with his mouth. At first glance he might be the least physically intimidating man who could break you in half, but verbally he will let you know. As quick witted and verbose as the UFC has ever seen, his relentless trash talking has maintained him a sold fanbase outside of the UFC and that has only inflated now he has the biggest platform from which to spit.

The wrong fight

Robbie Lawler and ref Herb Dean.

The problem with this fight was the conflicting nature of those last two paragraphs. Everyone loves Robbie Lawler, including Ben Askren: “I didn’t really want to fight him the first place, I like Robbie Lawler a lot”, he explained after the fight. Upon joining the roster last year, Askren fired shots at almost everybody in the welterweight division, except for Robbie Lawler. Strangely, that was the fight that was made.

Both UFC president Dana White and Lawler himself want to rebook the fight, and that is completely understandable. Sports are designed to decide something definitively, and we got the exact opposite of that. However, is it the smart move? I don’t think so. Askren’s talents are surely better utilised against someone he can go back and forth with verbally. He enters the UFC at 34 years of age. He hasn’t taken a lot of damage in his career, but that still isn’t reason to waste him.

We got his debut out of the way and he got to prove he can hang with the best in the world. He had plenty of mic time to make an impression and summon the ire of many of his peers. He also, crucially, remains undefeated, always a nice selling point for the promotion. Meanwhile, Robbie Lawler, in the eyes of many didn’t really “lose”. He also put a hellacious beating on Askren prior to the unfortunate ending, retaining his aura.

It was a good fight, but in the long run both men are better served elsewhere. Askren wants to face the winner of Darren Till vs Jorge Masvidal. You’re telling me you don’t want to hear Darren Till and Ben Askren screaming at each during a press conference? You know you want that.
